We've leased both our cars for a number of years now, one practical family car and a smaller run around. Our current run around goes back in 6 months but due to COVID and working from home its only done 3k miles in 18 months.

We'd really need a second car but thinking of just buying something and running until it dies. The thought of something along these lines appeals as it can double up as van for doing tip runs etc. Would likely only do a max of 5k miles per year possibly less.

Anything else I should be considering. Probably looking to spend 4-6k. Don't want anything too big.

We've got a Berlingo as the family runabout, it gets used more than any other car, ity just so handy. But expect to do lots more than your estimated mileage, it'll get used for everything.
Have a look a WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles) on eBay if you're going second hand, you tend to get low mileage examples for very low cost, sometimes with the added advantage of a ramp or a winch.

Cheers, seen one of those with wheel chair access on auto trader when checking prices. Our local tip doesn't allow vans without a permit but normal cars I.e. something like an estate or a Berlingo is fine.

Given the mileage I'd be looking at a petrol or non turbo diesel assuming they made a non turbo Diesel.

+1 for a WAV.
I currently run a Caddy, and have had a Doblo Wheelchair car.
I ran a Partner for a Charity I'm involved with, which now has a Berlingo.
I use the Caddy/Doblo for general running around and carting my Enduro bike around.
4 seats for occasional use us handy.
No van speed limits
No tip restrictions
Car prices on toll bridges
Car tax is emissions based, rather than as a Goods vehicle
Possible insurance ramifications as vans can be more expensive to insure, even as a Private vehicle.

Caddy is the more car like and civilised, but no power below 1800 revs and not overly economical.
Doblo next, but the later 263 model diesel is woefully overgeared so is actually thirsty as you're up and down the box all the time. 6th is useless under 60mph. A mild map transforms the engine and will give another 15 to 20mpg (seriously!) and make the car more driveable.
Partner and Berlingo, even in WAV form are more van like. New models are OK round the town, but over 50mph, they show their van heritage.
They have overboost on the diesel turbo, so the front tyres take a hit if you drive in a spirited fashion. If you look at vans, the Enterprise models have the 2 litre, which is very peppy off the line.

In a choice between the French and Italians, I'd take the Fiat.

Thanks for the replies.

I'd not consider the Mazda 5 so will add it to the short list.
