Hi all, for a bit of context I have been hankering after a DC5 Integra again. I had two in the past (along with two DC2's) and have been wanting to revisit the 'Teg.' I also owned an FD2 which is technically the better car, but I always loved the look of the Integra more.

I currently own an FK8 Type R which I love, and unfortunately I cannot afford to get an Integra as a second car without selling the Civic. But given the recent ludicrous increase in price from what I paid I have been tempting myself with a cunning plan.

My proposition to myself is to sell the FK8 and with the extra I will have made (around £6k) I can get a Megane 275 Trophy and a DC5 Integra Type R with a couple of grand left over to buy lots of cheese or socks.

I guess my question is, to find out what the PH collective would opt for if given the choice:

One of these:

Or these two:

My reasoning is, the Megane will give me around 90% of the brilliance of the FK8, for a lot less money and will get me an Integra to be my 'special' car to look after, keep in the garage and enjoy for a good few years to come. Something like that.

Sounds like a cracking plan, two exceptionally good cars for the price of one. The best bit is neither car is bad so you don't have to be one of those people who runs something terrible for 90% of their time behind the wheel in order to "save" their nice car for better times.

You've had the fun of the Civic and realistically in the medium term it will depreciate where as the Renault won't lose you as much and this is potentially offset by the continuing rise in Integra prices. That's if you give a toss about supposed values.

Sounds like a plan but what's the point? Dc5 and Mégane are fairly similar cars. I can't really imagine much a dc5 does better either.

I wouldn't, the FK8 is a great car and I'll think you will miss it. Also the DC5 is getting on a bit now, plus it was never as good as the DC2 (I have three DC2's and a 5).

+1 Don't see the point of owning two cars that are so similar.

Don't forget that the purchase price is just one part of the cost of ownership. 2x insurance, 2x MoTs, 2x road tax.

Don’t get me wrong OP - I love all three of the cars in question but like others have said - why get 2 cars so similar? (I.e FwD)

Also, DC5 prices have ballooned to the point where I’d question if the value is still there. Given you need to part with at least £15k for a good one - I think the best value to be had in that world is actually an FD2.

You may not like the looks of the saloon, but having owned both, I would definitely say the FD2 is a step up in driving experience over the DC5.

Given the FD2 is now about £15k, and a much newer and technically superior car, I think that is where the value is. I think they are probably rarer here as well than the Teg.

Just some food for thought I guess….

Yes I see the points about them being similar cars, but the Integra goes about it's business in a very different way I suppose. The Integra would be a second car, but I would still want my daily to be fun and a bit special too . As mentioned I'd love to keep the FK8, but the amount I'm being offered over what I paid is almost making it a no-brainer to be able to get into something pretty good and get an Integra. I did consider a Hyundai I30 N but they've leaped up a bit in price too, but the Megane is still roughly not far where it was a year or so ago.

If I do go ahead with my plan, the DC5 will be a given, I guess the question is what else could I consider that's fun and interesting. I've had a Megane 265 before which was very good, so I know what I'll be getting with a Trophy (if I can find one). All of this is very first-world problems I know, I'm just in an interesting situation at the minute.

Edit: just saw your post Ikonic - yes I agree with the FD2 thoughts - I could easily switch the DC5 for an FD2 in my plan, they are great. Might try and buy my old one back (again!).

Is there a need for the second car to be quite so practical? You could still go for the Megane as a daily and pair it up with something a bit more interesting as the weekend toy, Caterham/Elise etc.

I agree with the poster above I'd go FD2 Civic:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274903559209?hash=item4...

The Megane is a cracking steer but Cup/Trophy cars aren't cheap but a car that gets very close is the Astra GTC VXR & they're still sensible money, which'll leaave an nice amount towards the DC5/FD2.

VXR

I've just got a big soft spot for the DC5, love the way it looks, love the VTEC (yo) engine and enjoy the way it doesn't have too much power to enjoy on the roads. Seems like for a half-decent DC5 you're looking around £12-15k and FD2 around £16-18k. There are quite a few overpriced ones that aren't budging. Interesting choices, I wonder which way it will turn out. I've had a decent offer from a Honda dealer that has almost matched WBAC, pending inspection. I am very fortunate to even own an FK8, I could only dream about such cars a few years ago, so I won't be sad if I just decide to do nothing. Yes, I know it's not a McLaren, but it's the closest I'll ever get to one!

I got more from my local dealer than motorway and WBAC offered. Push them a bit, Also DC2 is far more special ((i've had the DC5 and FD2 too)

You're selling a two year old Honda that's presumably still under warranty, in exchange for a fifteen to twenty year old Honda plus a five to seven year old Renault. Do be aware that your garage bills will increase a fair bit; suspension bushes, clutches, brake discs, and other bits and bobs can need replacing on cars of that sort of age, plus your age-related replacements will be double even if the mileage-related parts won't.

I'm not saying it'll be ruinous or that you shouldn't do it, but don't ignore the trade-off.

On the flip-side, the pair of cars you propose will probably hold value better than the FK8, so in two-three years you may be able to change back if you want.

I saw in evo that the Swindon shutdown has left a number of disappointed would-be FK8 buyers, leading to a rise in values for the cars they did make. Seems the same as the S660 in Japan, another car whose production Honda cut off, leading to rising used values. So likely part of the picture with the values of your car.

There is no wrong choice here.

DC5 has the most interesting engine but will feel slower than the other pair. Rust an issue here too.

The second thoughts are strong today, it's such a great car. Might need to head out to the Costa coffee round the corner, park it in my eyeline and have a proper ponder.

You have nothing to lose really if you don’t gel with the 2 cars, both very sought after so an easy sell I think if you change your mind.

Well after a period of soul searching at Costa's followed by a spirited drive down some country roads, before picking my daughter up, I have decided I can't sell it. I've cancelled the WBAC appointment. It's too good for what I need it for and it's got aspects that are often missing from newer cars - character and fun. Plus it looks ridiculous smile Thank you for all the comments, both for and against - my heart won over my money-grabbing head!

There still might be an Integra plan if the stars align...

As a former DC2 owner, I know what you mean, these things do get under your skin, so if that's what you want, nothing else will do

Personally I'd pair one with a 6 cylinder sports car. I drive a Boxster S now and that would make a great 2 car combo with a teg thumbup I've also had a Z4 Coupe and 350Z and either of them would also do the trick, a complimentary car to the teg.

Lots of other choices too, Elise, Caterham, 370Z, 996, Monaro, Chim, etc...

I've had a few hot hatches and they're good steers but for me a Type-R fills that niche and then some, get something different to go alongside.

Edit: should have read the previous post before replying, but food for thought wink

I think you’ve made the right choice. I’m a big fan of the Megane RS 275 and the looks of the Integra but they’re getting on a bit. The Civic will do it all for you.
