Is this a COVID thing or just the dealer I happened to visit?

Can’t reveal the manufacturer or where exactly but let’s just say nothing exotic and while supplies may be limited there are stocks around both at that dealership and at various others.

They wouldn’t make a lot out of me on extras but I can take a trade in out the equation (meaning no risk of getting a lemon) so a quick and easy sale.

Test drive on a demonstrator went well and I was ready to discuss a deal, pointing out some other prices online but also making a point that I accepted they were a distance away so not being unreasonable. Sales guy went to his manager to discuss but the word back was we won’t discount. I upped and left inviting them to contact me if they change their mind.

Frankly I’m rather annoyed they wouldn’t make some kind of gesture, even if it was in the form of extras rather than money off. I doubt they have a queue round the block of others willing to pay exactly rrp. Never had this kind of response before with previous car sales so fully expected a bit of movement that we could both accept and to put a deposit down today.

If they were polite in the way they said no, then I don't think you have any justification for being annoyed. You are entitled to politely make an offer, and it is their right to say no.

Try another dealer to see if they will budge, or pay the full price.

In the current climate with a shortage of new & used stock, what is their incentive to offer a discount?

My last two new car purchases (in 2017 & 2019) were both at list price, because of long waiting lists on factory orders, meaning that the dealers had no need to discount, as they could sell the cars at list price to other buyers.

At the end of the day, it is simple supply & demand at play, with sellers having the upper hand at the moment.

This

It’s their car, they can sell it for the price they choose.

If you think you can get it cheaper, buy one elsewhere. It’s a free market.

They clearly think they can get sticker price for it - time will tell if they’re right.

You're a buyer in a seller's market I'm afraid. Boot's on the other foot at the moment.

Thanks for the responses. Appreciate they don’t have to sell to me and we left it on amicably so perhaps they will be in touch. Perhaps they have hit their targets or something but not surprised to see cars in stock if they are holding out so much. I’d get it if we were talking factory order.

Will have a look at other options meantime, I’d rather give them the business being more local and already had their time for the test drive but not at any cost.

Annoyed they didn’t offer something off. Why, you can’t expect anything off in the current second hand market. Being annoyed is simply ridiculous.

Now you've had a test drive and confirmed that you like the car, spec one the same on carwow and see if there's a deal to be had and consider having it delivered.

Have a look on Carwow, you'll soon see if RRP is the going rate.

Well given the delays and paucity of new stock even more reason for them to want to get full value for their investment, the choice is yours buy it or walk, you chose to walk nothing to be annoyed about, disappointed you couldn't do deal? Perhaps, but no reason to be annoyed at them.

Thanks may give that a go. Quite sure that rrp isn’t going to be stuck to by everyone based on AT and the headline carwow average saving.

True, my vocabulary perhaps wasn’t quite right, more disappointed as up until that moment it seemed to be heading to the deal. I don’t think I was being unreasonable but as you say, they don’t have to sell if they don’t want to.

The point being made is that both new and second-hand markets are suffering from a shortage in supply, and an increase in demand, so it is seller’s market and they can hold out for their price.

Dealers are very short of used cars so no p/x is a negative point, not a positive one.
By ‘extras’ do you mean paint protection etc? That’s another negative.
I’m guessing you’re a cash buyer too?

Hmm....if you were in the dealers shoes would you be keen to sell you a car?

So, if they were to offer say 500 off it you’d buy it.

How much is it worth to you if you lose the car?

How much time and money will you spend finding another?

Drivethedeal offering 20% off on top if you wait for a factory build in 2022......

Think it’s normal at the moment , we bought a q3 recently and the dealer would not budge £1. It was priced fairly , but I still expected £100 or so based on every other car I have bought.

In fact it’s had FASH but, I called Audi and they couldn’t say for definite if the Haldex and S-Tronic box had been serviced as their records don’t detail what , just that it has been there and been serviced. The garage offered to do the labour free if we paid £100 towards the oil lol. So actually ended up paying over , but had the assurance the servicing was up to date. They even sent photos at my request of them doing it.

I made up for it by not moving a penny on the car we sold , and had no trouble getting full price.

Both buying and selling, I have never done at full price before!
