Hi guys, just wondering if I can get some advice.

Recently paid for a deposit for a car with a credit card over the phone. The seller (motor trader) has applied/sent off for the logbook with dvla around 2 weeks ago and still awaiting the logbook back from dvla. I will pay the remaining balance on the credit card. The car wasn't priced at a price point where it was suspiciously cheap, for example motorway offering £4500 and i'm paying £5800 for it..

I've done a hpi check yesterday with VCHECK and everything comes back clear with the car, not written off and no outstanding finance.

He also done a new 12 months M.O.T on the car at his garage yesterday and this shows up on dvla mot website.. garage seems very reputable, five star ratings over the years, all reviews appear genuine as loads of the profiles have more than one review against their names..

I have no reason to think the car/trader is dodgy and that he is simply just awaiting for the logbook.

My question is do you think it will be fine to drive the car away and wait for the logbook? As dvla state V5 is not proof of ownership, also in regards to tax as it is showing no tax, is there a way I can tax it at a post office without the logbook?

Thank you

Thanks.

Without details from the V5 is the HPI check valid? What I mean is that you won't get the protection the HPI offers as you won't have met the criteria.

Ah crap, I did not think of that...

Think I will speak to him tomorrow and see what he says, ideally I'd like to take the car there and then but as you say without V5 present there's no protection having done the HPI check without it.. it's just a rare spec'd golf 1.4 TSI GT which has all the bells and whistles that I wouldn't want to lose out on.

but my mind says, it should be fine paid on a credit card, any issues I've got the credit card comeback.

I must add that they have only a few cars for sale on their website, 4 at the moment and their main business appears to be MOT's, tyres, Exhausts, alignment, general service and repairs..

I doubt they'd risk their reputation and business over a £6k car? Plus the credit card deposit showed him companies name on the statement..

Isn't it the VIN you need for the check, rather than anything off the V5 - you can get the VIN from the car (in fact you're probably best going off the one on the car)

If it's being flagged as being untaxed on https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax then I would go to the post office, ask for a V62, fill it out (you'll need the VIN and reg of the car), pay the £25 fee for the V62 and then pay the VED there and then. That will be the most headache-free way of doing it as you are not having to rely on any other people at the garage or those lazy sods at the DVLA. Make sure you get a receipt from the post office in case any coppers pull you.
