Hi all

Anyone know anything about the above?

They appear to be a good mix of brisk practically without stepping into the VAG products.
Auto only, but use a conventional torque converter auto not the earlier 'powershift' dual clutch boxes.
So I believe should be more reliable.

Some of the ecoboost engines have a bad rep, but this seems to be more specifically the smaller capacity models I believe.

Anyone owned one?
Opinions?

Alternatives?

Had a Mk7 2.4 accord before and really liked that car, but they are all a bit long in the tooth and the Mk8 with a 2.4 is available with a sunroof only so I don't fit (too tall).

Looked at mazda6 models but they seem steep for a nice one in traders or are rotten.

Thanks!

Only that Honest John used to recommend that engine when it was fitted to various JLR products.

ZX10R NIN loves them, he's always recommending them, so they must be pretty decent.

Chucked the hybrid version around at Millbrook a bit, chassis seems pretty good, and overall a pretty nice place to be, nice and comfortable. Initially felt a bit bulky, like there's a lot of car around you, visibility isn't the best, but pretty wieldy when you're actually driving it.. Can't comment on the ecoboost / auto drivetrain.

mk4.5 Mondeo is a fantastic car,

great solidly built car that is criminaly overlooked by just about everyone.

polar opposites but the closest thing i have found to my old mk4.5 is my G31 5 series.

get it bought, their fantastic cars and will definitely hold their money. comfiest seats you will find anywhere spent many a 18 and 20 hour day in a set.

shoot, just saw your talking about the mk5

dont its an absolute dog of a car. the mk5 Mondeo is the single biggest dissapointment i've ever experienced. poor poor poor follow up the fantastic mk4

Would be a Mk5, bit more up to date and a few issues ironed out from my research.

I've seen the horror stories and problems the Powershift boxes throw up on the Mk4/4.5 which has put me off them.
I know I'd just be doubting it every time I drove it.
Not sure if they were available as manual?

I know by the Mk5 the 240ps engine is auto only, but they dropped the dodgy dual clutch box

gearbox is about the only thing they got right,

i've put 1/4 million miles on both a mk4 and a mk5 the mk4 is a far superior car

It would probably help the OP if you could explain specifically what you didn't like about the mk5. Too slow? noisy? uncomfortable? unreliable?

Run one for 2 years now from 50k to 64k, nice and ticks most boxes. Not particularly sporty if I’m honest but a nice place to be. I get about 22mpg just doing local runs and about 35-37mpg when on a motorway run. Touch wood been very reliable. If you’re bothered about in car entertainment then get one with Sync3, if not Sync2 is ok. Sync3 was 2016 onwards so don’t believe autotrader when it says Sync3 on 2015 or older. Steering wheels tend to shed rubber, mines in a right state so bought a cover for it. Also steering rack bolts are issues so Google and check.

Can't comment on the Mondeo but have the exact same engine in our SMax.

The engine is alittle gem. Enough grunt that you'll ever need, hasn't thrown up a single problem for us and is cheap to service. Whisper quiet but does produce a half decent sound for a 4 cylinder over 4k rpm.

We get about 21mpg around town and 34mpg on motorway but I suspect Mondeo should do slightly better as not as heavy and more aerodynamic.

I don't get the hate for the Dual Clutch Powershift... We are on our second Powershift car with a combined 70k miles between them and never had a single issue, long as you look after them, like anything, they just keep on going and are very smooth.

its just a poor car when compared side by side with the mk4,

the mk4 is better in every single way,

less NVH better reliability better looking (subjective i know) easier maintained. cheaper to run, better on fuel better parts availabilty

Mk4/4.5 the 2.0T was only available as an auto with the powerst. It's one reason why I stuck with the 2.5T and I won't get another Mondeo.

I did briefly contemplate getting a Mk4.5 with the 2.0T and converting to a manual...but that's just idiocy, even though it would be fairly easy to do.

This guy runs a fleet of Mk5 taxis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iPoz6hf96Q

Not the petrol but should give you an idea of the overall reliability of the Mk5.

For domestic, non taxi, mileage use, the Mk5 is still a very good car -it was still the best option for me.

The Mk4 was unusually (for nowadays) able to keep going for many taxi miles.

I had a Mk4 estate for 7 years and have had a Mk5 estate for almost 2 years. It is not quite as well packaged for luggage carrying as the Mk4, the but is comfortable and handles well. As with previous Mondeo, it handles equally well empty and fully laden.

Loaded with kit too.

Steering (with the anti weave disabled)is much better than most modern cars I've driven.

Interesting you say it's better on fuel - I thought the mk4.5 and mk5 240ps were the same engine? Just the gearbox changed to a more reliable unit.
But then you are claiming the powershift model is more reliable?

Which bits are easier maintained, do you have any examples?

Seems you are very fond of the Mk4, I just can't see the gain from going for an older more dated car but you may change my mind.

Thanks for all other input!

I suspect that Glasgowrob may be talking about diesels, and I think that he uses his cars as taxis.

Domestic owners will probably never need to do any maintenance beyond servicing and brakes.

Fuel consumption for the petrols isn't one of the strong points, but depending upon your mileage that may or may not bother you.

I have a 66 plate MK5 Estate 2.0 ecoboost 240PS and I LOVE IT.

Bought it at 6 months old from Ford Direct with 4,000 miles on the clock. Managed to get the exact spec that I wanted, including SYNC 3 - which is important. Some 66 plate cars still have SYNC 2 which doesn't have Carplay / Android Auto.

The car is so comfortable, quiet, nice to drive, fairly fast, plenty of space for 5, great load capacity with the seats down.

Thinks like adaptive cruise work really well, and are very useful in average speed zones on busy motorways. Auto-dip headlights are also extremely effective. Heated steering wheel is lovely when it's cold, and the heated windscreen means you can set off pretty much straight away even in the middle of winter.

Absolutely no reason not to buy one.

Is it really a nice place to be? The mk5?

I had a soft spot for the Mondeo after driving a mk2 and owning a mk3, and really, really wanted to like the mk5 but after all the production delays when it finally appeared I thought blimey, what an awful, all black, plastic interior.

Never even bothered with a test drive.

Its a comfortable place with everything on hand. I won't compare it to anything in the upper premium class, but yes its a nice place to be. We also have an E350 Cab and that is a way nicer place to be but for what it is, the Mondeo works for me as a whole package.
