Going back into the office in a couple of weeks time and want to get a car to drive the 5 miles to the train station. The car will occasionally be left overnight.

Budget, cheaper the better....Car needs to be a reliable starter though.

I always say mk2 Yaris in answer to this sort of question - a 2009/10 model with the sixth gear. Yes the various versions of the Aygo are cheaper to run but not by much, and a Yaris is usefully bigger and better at motorway speeds should you ever need to do a longer journey for whatever reason. But if it really is just the station run it'll ever do, an Aygo will see you right enough.

My suggestion would be a Corolla, could get them with a proper auto as well if that was your thing for such a short journey.

I'd be tempted with a Mk2 Megane. Cheaper than chips, and pretty decent to drive. They also warm up quickly.

But it's hard to fault the suggestions that have been made so far.

Another vote for the Aygo. We use one to take the dog out and about.

Renault Clio. You’ll rarely see a rusty one and for something French they’re quite well built.

Maybe a technical Hilux with a manikin stood behind a Dushka. Should deter most station car park yobs

Perfect cheap station car

Citroen C1
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108196...

Cheap (£1495)
Zero tax
Cheap to insure (group 3)
MOT until July next year
Full service history
Recently serviced, won't need one for another 12,000 miles
Small, simple engine, warms up quickly(?)
Good fuel economy
Ropey bodywork, you won't care about denting it at the station

Would be ideal to run over the winter as my cars will be off the road for the next 4-5 months.

We've just picked up an Audi A3. 2005 3.2 V6, as our station car.

Invisible, bland, but it's an auto with 4 wheel drive and is really comfy.

Cost us £1200 with a new MoT.

Our other choice was an old Volvo.

I'd plump for something that at least feels solid on a wet, dark morning.
