What budget? Any mileage constraints? Petrol or diesel?

Petrol - BMW 340i/340d - very frugal for the lower available

2008 BMW 535d with 76k miles would be a good start, or maybe a 100k mile Mercedes E350d.

A 330d or 530d if you need a bit more space.

Have a look on autotrader, put in your requirements and a low 0-60 time and that should give you some ideas.

Depends what kind of mpg you are prepared to tolerate

You can have 450 bhp if you are prepared to put up with 13 mpg

If you want something capable of 60 mpg, then you'll have to make do with 190 bhp

What type of journeys do you do? Is fuel economy a concern? How much do you actually want to spend? How big an estate do you (Clio/Focus/C Class/E Class sized) want? Saying lets start at 10k suggests you actually want to spend more.

An E350 CDI will give you the best balance of speed/economy, these are seriously quick cars.

A VXR estate would be fun...

Something a little leftfield.
