Hello, hoping for some opinions/advice please.

I have bought a new car recently (not brand new, 2 years old) and part exchanged my car as part of the purchase.

When I was in the dealership I was asked about service history, and I said, which is the honest truth, that I had had it serviced and MOT’d but that the only documentation I had was in the glove box.

Before we ‘completed’ the guy went and checked over the car to give me to valuation and also looked in the glove box. He said to me that there wasn’t any documents relating to the last service that was due.

I had already told him that I didn’t have anything else (I’d also just moved so anything I did have would be buried in a box), but he asked me to have a look when I got home and we carried on. I def got the impression that it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t think any more about it. I didn’t find anything more, and everything went ahead and I got my new car.

Roll on 2 weeks and I am having some issues with the car I bought (electrical). I contacted the guy I dealt with and he came back asking again about this service history.

I feel like he is almost saying to me they won’t help me unless I give them something on the service history.

Does anyone know where I stand with this? I feel like they’re just trying to get more money from me.

Did you tell him you had a look but didn't find anything? From his point of view, there will be a bigger margin in a car with service history, but from what you've written I don't see any pressure or refusal to look at your car issues?

If your replacement car is 2 years old it will likely have manufacturers warranty so use that for your claim.

@Scooby - I have asked him 3 times who I need to speak to about looking at my car and each time he fobs me off that someone from after sales will contact me, but then brings up the service history point.

Maybe I’m completely misreading the situation but it just feels like he’s telling me that they’re not helping me because I’m not helping them!

@av - I bought from the main dealer so that’s where I would be taking it anyway!

If it's a main dealer, you'll probably need to speak with Service dept directly about getting it booked in/looked at - not sure the sales guy will care now the deal is done.

OP just tell him straight you haven't got anything other than what was in the car when he bought it

If the shoe was on the other foot I would be asking for money to cover the difference.

Although I also feel like the onus is on the buyer to comfort themselves with what they’re buying. I’ve not set out to mislead them - I gave them full access to my car. If he’d have said buying this subject to receipt of the additional documents then fair enough but he didn’t.

I suppose I need to just flush out what he actually wants.

I think he wants you to spend twenty minutes making a small effort to find some paperwork that you told him existed. Or tell him where the last service was done at least. Throw him a bone please.

Surely due to GDPR you don't have to handle over any documentation that has a record of your personal details on it? I assume that you are lucky to even get a stamp these days as everything regarding servicing is stored electronically?

Go to your local breakers yard and find a service book in a vehicle the same as yours. Give him that

Is the place you had it serviced local to you?

Ask them for a copy invoice, send it to the garage.

Not much effort on your part, everyone happy.

Speak to the service department directly about getting your new car sorted, and could you speak to the place where you got your old car serviced to see if they still have records on their system?

The salesman will be getting penalised for not taking the service history from you. Best speak to the service department and ignore the salesman. If he gives you anymore issues register a complaint.

And get the salesman in trouble? Jeez. Hope you're never on the receiving end of the sort of attitude you're suggesting. Doesn't cost anything to be nice.

This just book it in with the service department & ask your garage for copies of your invoices, job done.

You trading in a car has no bearing on any faults for a car you have bought, the two are not related.

Your new car is in warranty so just call them up and book it in.
