Looking to get a new family run around with a £5,000 budget.

I've been thinking;

Tiguan
XC60 with the D4, haven't heard great things about the 2.5
Rav4

Open to all suggestions but as I typically do 12,000 miles a year reliability is key.

Tiguan all day, great cars. We currently have a mk1.5 (8 years old ish) and a mk2 (2 years old ish), had both from new and neither have ever put a foot wrong. They have covered over 200,000 miles between them. The mk1.5 gets used and abused!

However, they are both the 2.0 diesel units, 4motion and auto. Fuel consumption is roughly 39mpg, which is worse than our 530d touring!

Agreed. Plus you get a V6 petrol with good mpg on the 400H. Lots of space, all the gadgets you really need. Super comfy and quiet too. Mine feels like new mechanically at 103,000 miles, feels like it will do another 100k with no issues. I fancy a CLS 400 for 25k ish but really can't justify changing, I suspect the 400H will stay for a long time,

I've been looking at a MPV/SUV for the missus.

Top two SUV at the moment for us is the Countryman or Qashqai.

Reliability wise all I have to go on is that my Cooper S hatchback was incredibly reliable over 4 years. Never owned a Nissan but have had a few Japanese cars which have always been good to me!

The Ford Kuga is a great pick, they're reliable well made & with your annual the 2.0d is a good option:

If you want something a bit bigger then the ML is a very good buy at the moment.

All the above are reliable, out of the above the Kuga or ML are where my money would go.

Odd that the Merc MLs are around the same price as a Kia/Hyundai/Ford of a similar age and mileage - is the market just scared of higher maintenance/repair costs associated with Mercs so they have to be priced accordingly?

MOT history on that silver ML280 is very clean, if it wasn't 400 miles away I'd probably have a look for myself.

That brave pill.

The lexus RX is a good shout but they just look so dated.

With the qashqai's they tick all the right boxes and I'm guessing the diesel engine would be the best choice?

CRV's are ok but given the choice I'd probably go for a Rav4 over a CRV.

The 2 litre common diesels in the MK1 Tiguans I led to believe they are reliable but haven't had much experience with that engine.

If you can get a decent RX400h with FSH that’ll be the way to go and you’ll barely lose a dime come resale time as long as you keep it serviced.

I’d buy one but the good ones go very quickly.

This one is a CAT 2008 model that’s in budget

I wouldn't go for a RAV4 with a diesel engine they're pretty unreliable, the Tiguan is decent & reliable but I'd take the Kuga both are on par with each other so it'll come down to which you like the best.

These two.

Or the Prado/Colarado version of the Landcruiser although at that price it's more likely to be ropey compared to the Rav4 and CRV.

The 2.2 is not a good shout, but I think the 2.0 is still OK?

I actually have a 2.2 here with a cracked cylinder head.

What goes wrong on ML320's that would have you so viciously avoid them? I know from the owners club that they're known to be pretty much bulletproof but I'm guessing your experience of running one differs

Tiguan is a good shout, should probably be reliable. Here's a nice SE TDI 4Motion

Yes why? If you were talking about an original ML you may have had a point.
