How's it going people!

Need some advice from the more knowledgeable on here.. I'm in the market for a new car.. my current Passat estate has racked up 174,000 miles and is now getting to a point where I fix one thing and something else then goes pop.. engine is going strong but, at this stage, I feel I'm starting to spend more than it's worth..

I'm torn, the younger man in me wants something fast and fun and the more sensible adult in me wants a nice comfy 4x4 to suck up the motorway miles I do for work and the various adventures I go on around the UK so I'm after suggestions anything and everything, throw it at me.. I average around 15,000-17,500 miles a year now after moving and my budget is £10,000.. seems with the current increase in second hand value, it doesn't get as much as it used to for the money! I'm looking at a Ford Kuga Titanium or a Volvo XC60 at the moment but I'm very interested to see what other cars people may or may not recommend.

I was looking at a C350 CDI and Focus ST's so gives an idea of how broad the range is

Comfort and reliability are obviously top of the list.. MPG.. well, that would be handy, I'm not aiming high but, give the current fuel prices.. the idea of a C63 are out the window haha!

Looking forward to seeing what you suggest!

Cheers in advance

Plenty of people really rate XC90s, but they're never going to be fun!

What about a BMW 330d or 335d Touring or Merc C350D Estate?

You should get the space, refinement and economy together with a bit of entertainment.

If you just need an appliance to pile on the miles, the best value option will likely be to keep the Passat well maintained.
The whole design brief was an appliance to pile on the miles and it's a decent car.

Spending a few preventative quid each year staying ahead of the curve will likely be cheaper than the depreciation on buying something new.

But, not relevant if you actually want to treat yourself to something different.

That's true but the most recent repair bill is sitting around £1000 and after nearly 3 years with it I kind of fancy a change now

You've answered your own question to me, I'd go for the Merc, I had a C320 CDI and loved it.

I'd stay away from 4x4 if you can. Anything SUV seems to carry a hefty premium over its similarky sized saloon/estate equivalent, so that will make your budget stretch to something nicer

When it comes to SUV's at this price point the Infiniti EX pretty much ticks all of your boxes, they come with great spec & a well proven 3.0d drivetrain which is also ULEZ compliant, you can also add Android Auto/Apple Carplay to these.

EX GT:

If you want something newer to do the job that's comfortable/reliable & with a nice spec, the Insignia is very hard to beat, you'll get a great low mileage Auto example for your budget & being ULEZ/Caz compliant means you'll not have to worry about future legislation:

Elite Nav 160

If you don't mind a saloon then the Infiniti Q50 is a very good option it has the same drivetrain as a C220 so reliability is a given.

Great suggestions but I’ll be honest none of those tickle the fancy for me.. I know a car is a tool but you’ve got to want to look back and like your car.. never been a fan of Vauxhall had a couple in my earlier years and I just can’t stand them, build quality was never any good and neither were the engines to be fair

The V40 is a good option but for the same money I can have something much more bigger like the XC60 so it makes me wonder is my money better spent there

The earlier suggestion of the C320 isn’t a bad shout

I'll be honest with your brief the only one I'd take was the Infiniti EX over both the Kuga/XC60.

BUT I'd actually buy an E350 Coupe:

That’s a good selection I’ll take a closer look at them at work.. are the XC60’s a bad then? What is it that makes you go for the Infiniti over them, just curious more than anything

There's nothing wrong with XC60's they're good capable reliable cars, both cars drive will with the Nissan 3.0d being slightly sweeter.
The reason the the Infiniti edges it is because you'll get a better spec/lower mileage car that's has the added bonus of being ULEZ compliant

I'm not sure that a Ford Kuga is going to be any comfier than a Focus....a Volve XC60 on the other hand would be, but have you looked at the V60 estate, good range of engines...

Ultra Low Emission Zone/Clean Air Zones are being introduced in major cities in the UK London & Birmingham have them with other cities looking to do the same.

Basically any diesel will has to be Euro6 compliant otherwise you have to pay £12.50 per day, where you said you drive all over the UK I thought this may become an issue for you.

If you plan on keeping it a while i'd look at a Lexus GS450H

+ Super refined, more than any BMW/Merc/Audi or Jag of the same era, silent at any speed, comfortable place to sit in too
+ It's stupid fast! effortless power, more than enough to make you giggle when poked
+ Plenty of toys, (heated cooled electric memory seats, auto rear blind, reverse cam, sensors, great sound system etc)
+ Built to last as all Toyota products are, not really much that goes wrong with them
+ Goes about it's business like a V8 but returns 35+mpg all day on a run

- Boot isn't all that big for the size of the car
- Hybrid battery is a £1500+ fix if it goes wrong, (it rarely does and it wont leave you stranded, it'll still drive)
- Built in Sat Nav is pretty much unusable by todays standards, (Waze is better anyway)

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110058...

You'd be looking at a 2010 (facelift) with your budget with PLENTLY of life left in it if looked after. Definitely a car worth considering.

Good suggestion and decent synopsis.

My builds would be:
They moved from a V8 to 6cyl which that one is.
Also they are huge. Whilst they has its benefits, if you have tight drive / live in an area with tight roads, owning a car that’s ‘bigger than needed’ gets tiresome quickly.

And I say that as an ex-barge owner. Lovely for that early morning motorway drive. But when you realise you are using it solo most of time, it’s easy to start berating the amount of footprint required to park it up / thread now narrow lanes.

So just an update.. I’ve gone against a lot of the advice here.. sorry 😬

Narrowed it down to either
