Thinking of buying a new car soon but was wondering the petrol mpg performance etc difference between the 1.3 and the 1.6 petrol mercedes A class AUTOMATIC? Would it be a big difference in petrol due to the engine sizes, and any owners on here had any issues with the car?

Thanks in advance

take a look at honest john realmpg

I'd expect better economy and performance from the 1.3 being turbocharged vs N/A providing you dont drive it like its stolen

Any difference in petrol is going to be completely negligible, the biggest expense is buying it?

Two examples:

10,000 miles, using 1000 litres of fuel at 140p per litre:
45.46MPG // £1,400 per year

10,000 miles using 1200 litres of fuel at 140p per litre:
37.88MPG // £1,680 per year

If you're buying a new Mercedes, on their website the CHEAPEST new A class is £24,695 which is, presuming you want finance:

Customer Deposit £4,321.63
Monthly £278 x 48
Amount of Credit £20,373.37
Optional Purchase Payment £10,650.00

If you're worried about £20 a month difference on fuel I would not be buying a new car. Save half of that cost by buying used.

I can’t speak to that car specifically, but in all likelihood each will be better under different circumstances.

For example, the 1.3 will probably be better stop start around town and idling at the lights. The 1.6 might well be better cruising on the motorway under light throttle.

After all, to all intents and purposes the weight and drag of each car will be the same, so the difference will be down to the engine characteristics and gearing.

Whenever I’ve bought a small engined car the mpg has fallen well short of claimed performance, but most of my driving is open road. Larger engines cars have always been much closer to the mark. The bottom line is they’ve all done 30mpg though!

The 1.3 petrol is the M282 and is found in the newer 2018+ W177 A Class. Here is a writeup on the engine and comments on general reliability https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id...

The 1.6 petrol is the M270 and is found in the 2012-2018 W176 A Class. Writeup https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id...

Both are turbocharged and feature in the A160, A180 and A200 in different states of power output.

It sounds like the 1.3 is the more reliable unit.

In terms of mpg, it seems like the 1.3 edges it too. Ultimately, it's a newer engine so it performs better (I know this isn't strictly always the case).

The 1.6 is turbocharged? 100/122 bhp from a 1.6 turbo?

Yep. It's a rather detuned unit. It makes peak power at only 4500 rpm through to 6000, and obviously has better torque than an NA unit, with 133 lb ft at 1200 rpm.

It's not that unusual, Audi had a 1.8 turbo unit in their A4 with 120 bhp.

Look at it this way, you can go from 120 bhp to 190 bhp with a remap in the A-class and from 120 to 220 bhp with the Audi A4!
