My budget is about 16k, looking at a new to me (used) car.

My current car is a Seat Ibiza, it's 3 door, small and a 1.2 petrol. I've had this car for nearly 4 years and it's time for a change.

The main things I would like my new car to be is a nice comfortable place to be in as my commute to work is a 60 mile round trip, mainly on the motorway so I'd like a car that can comfortably handle this journey. I'd also like it to be fuel efficient and not cost me an arm and a leg to run and maintain. Due to my mainly motorway miles I've been looking at diesels but I wouldn't rule out petrol. I've also been looking at cars from 2016 onwards as ideally I don't want to replace my 2016 Seat with an older car. Also looking around 50k miles and under.

A few cars on my shortlist are. Audi A4 S line, BMW 1 series, Skoda Octavia vrs, Golf (Unsure on the model) and Ford Focus St line. To me these are some of the nicer looking cars whilst also offering decent mpg affording to the official details.

Would like opinions on my shortlist and other options.

Thanks all.

Pre covid I was doing the same journeys and mileage as you. I had a MK7 Golf GTD and for that type of drive it was brilliant, very easy 50+ Mpg, £20 a year VED, radar cruise for being lazy, xenons, and comfy.

Agree on the diesel but I’d ensure it’s a 2016+ euro6 so you are reasonably future proofed.
Setting filters on autorader for 16k, diesel saloon, 2.0L+, 40k max miles, 2016+, auto box, I’d take one of the 3 available passats.

Someone will be along shortly to recommend the Infiniti Q50 smile

First off, £16k is a lot of money - even in today’s used car market - so there’s no need to spend anywhere near that much to get what you’re after, unless a specific car is really worth the cost for you.

The first thing you mention is comfort, but the trims you mentioned (S line, vRS and ST Line) are sporty trims with bigger wheels and stiffer suspension. What does comfort mean to you - supportive seats, a cushy, smooth ride, a firmer and more controlled ride or something else?

The models I’ve picked below are generally the standard or luxurious trims, with smaller wheels and softer suspension rather than the sporty versions, but should be economical, comfy and reasonably reliable. They seem to be very sensible, too. I’m sure someone else will come in with more zany options soon!

2016 (16), 39k miles, BMW i3 - £15,950
Quick, very easy to drive and cheap to run electric option, reasonable comfy though not as cushy as the others here.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110148...

2017 (67), 43k miles, Mazda 6 2.2d SE-L Nav - £11,995
Precise steering, slick gearbox, extremely smooth, punchy and economical diesel engine. Nice and comfy in SE-L Nav form with 17-inch alloys (rather than the 19s of Sport Nav versions), yet still is excellent to drive. Lots of standard kit. One owner, full dealership history.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107225...

2016 (16), 28k miles, Nissan Pulsar 1.2 DiG-T Acenta - £7,695
Very dull to look at, but surprisingly pleasant to drive, reasonably punchy engine, decently economical and £30 road tax. Should be a very cheap option and may work if excitement and desirability aren’t hugely important to you.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110198...

2016 (66), 42k miles, Suzuki Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet SZ-T - £7,495
Worthy but surprisingly enjoyable to drive - and economical - option. Very light, frugal and - thanks to an eager three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine - unexpectedly quick. Last time I drove one of these I made a mental note to get one if ever I needed a cheap, economical and fun-to-drive commuter car. If you like whizzing around in a small, nippy and economical car, rather than cruising around in a barge it could be a good option. £20 road tax, too.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108316...

2019 (19), 36k miles, Toyota Corolla 1.2T Icon - £12,800
Strong value, only two years old (three years of manufacturer warranty remaining), reliable, reasonably nippy. Not exciting, but should give you a stress-free motoring life. One owner, full history.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109227...

2016 (16), 39k miles, Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Turbo 125 Energy - £8,079
Surprisingly enjoyable to drive, decently punchy and economical engine, pretty comfy and refined. Great value and very easy to live with.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108065...

2016 (16), 43k miles, Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI 150 SE Business - £12,674
Very comfy and refined, beautifully high-quality cabin and designed for cruising along the motorway all day long. Reasonably quick, economical and only £20 road tax. 24-month+ warranty.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109307...

2017 (66), 37k miles, Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI 125 Match Edition - £12,510
Comfy, pleasant to drive, £30 road tax with punchy and economical petrol engine. Seems pricey compared with the Passat above, though it’s pretty good value for a Golf.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109207...

2016 (16), 38k miles, Volvo V40 2.0 T3 [152] SE Lux Nav - £13,500
Quick and comfy hatchback with brilliant Volvo seats and relatively small alloy wheels, so the ride should be particularly comfortable. Well suited to bombing up and down the motorway in comfort.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110138...

2017 (67), 46k miles, Volvo S60 2.0 D4 SE Nav - £12,100
Brilliantly comfy, fast and super-economical (70mpg+) with same excellent Volvo seats. Very low key machine, but it looks excellent value for me when it comes to exconomical and comfortable motorway cruising.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110198...

2018 (18), 41k miles, Volvo S60 2.0 T4 SE Nav - £14,990
Similarly comfy to the model above with same fantastic seats but petrol engine and even faster - with 6.8-second 0-62mph time - and claimed mog of over 50mpg. Not exciting, but should be a really comfy, satisfying car to live with.

I presume your Ibiza is £30 road tax, returns you over 50mpg on a long commute, and hasn't gone wrong very much. Cheap servicing, decent dealers, and drive much better than most people would imagine for a small car.

Yes a bigger posher car will be a more comfortable drive with less road noise, but I bet at one point you'll miss the running costs of the Ibiza.

Just saying as I've driven hundreds of different cars and when I've driven the Ibiza's, and the Fabia's, with the 1.2 lumps, I've been hugely impressed with them and more so their running costs. I got 64mpg on a long run in a Fabia 1.2 Tsi 110bhp once cruising at 65mph.

I've always liked the look of the GTD. There's a few knocking about on Auto trader for around 16k for a 16 plate which seems a lot but I suppose it's the badge and current market contributing to that. I take it the diesel are all 2 litre? If so could you tell me roughly how much it was costing you to fill up fully? 50+mpg sounds good and I imagine it would be higher cruising on the motorway. Also, is radar cruising the same as adaptive cruise control? I'd like my next car to have that along with a few other nice extras. Thanks.

Yes your right about my Ibiza, it's been a really solid car and I haven't really had any issues with it and I usually get 50+ mpg on the motorway however it's a PCP deal and it's running out in a few months so I need to change it really. Plus my circumstances are different now to when I first got the Ibiza. I need something bigger and ideally better suited to my longer journey on the motorway now. I'm only really looking at cars that are supposed to deliver 50+mpg as I don't want to be shelling out a fortune on fuel.

Left field thought OP, you can get a brand new Mini for c. 16k.

The base model has just had a facelift spec upgrade and they're nice little cars perfectly capable of 30 comfy miles each way on the motorway.

They hold value though, I put 33k miles on mine in two years and sold it for £2150 less that I paid for it, not bad. Yes adaptive and radar same thing, standard on the mk7 and 7.5 GTD’s and GTI’s, on A and B roads it was great as most people can’t seem to maintain a constant speed. I would regularly get high 50’s mpg without really trying, I guess £60 to fill up at the moment?

Whilst I only had mine for 18 months and 35,000 miles - nothing went wrong in that time. Previous 147 was also trouble free up to 45,000 when I changed it.

I think ZX on here says that reliability is pretty good these days.

Fuel economy on the 1.4TB 170 I had was ok from memory although as a company car where I paid 12p for my private mileage I didn’t keep much of a check!

Diesel should be good I suspect

The Giulietta is no more unreliable than the equivalent Golf/Focus/Astra, the diesel is a very good unit.
