So I've taken a chaps car in PX against mine today and when he presented me with the V5 to do the online transfer I spotted that it;s the old one from when he bought the car in the previous keepers name.

He's owned the car for 3.5 years and it's currently taxed etc so before the conspiracy theories start lets just work on the basis he is totally legit.

The car is lovely and low owners. I might keep it, I might not. Until I decide the best thing would be to get a new V5 without registering it with me but I'm cool if I need to do that to get the document.

I've been onto the DVLA website and it is suggesting the existing keeper needs to apply for the V5. Ideally I would like to take control of this process for obvious reasons so armed with a receipt showing I have 'purchased' the vehicle, and the car and all it's documents is there a way for ME to apply for the V5?

Thanks in advance.

Talk to him? Why would he refuse to give you the correct one if he's 100% legitimate.

He doesn't know where it is and thought he brought it. He genuinely seemed surprised when I said 'this isn't the latest one', but I really don't want this request for help to turn into a tirade of conspiracy theories etc. The reality is the car is here, the old V5 is, a receipt is, but the latest V5 isn't. That's the issue to fix here.

Cheers

In that instance a V62 form and £25 is the only way I know of.

Quickest way is

https://get-duplicate-vehicle-log-book.service.gov...

You need to get the current owner to do it - or do it on their behalf but it will need to go to them, it will go to the registered address. If you try and do it yourself so the V5 comes to you it will take ages while the DVLA write to the current owner.

The other option is the V62 and post the old "new keeper" slip but fill out the V62 in the new owners details.

No conspiracy theory, but it’s all too common for a missing V5 to be because it’s been taken as security on a logbook loan. It won’t necessarily show up on a HPI check. I’d be delaying the deal and putting it onto him to sort it out.
