I have a lease car through pink leasing - I believe the finance provider is arval, I wanted to put my private plate on the car - it is currently on a V778 retention plate. Arval have advised I need to send the certificate and they will process with £24 admin fee which sounds reasonable.

However on returning the lease car, they advised the private plate will go back onto certificate but with Arval as the grantee as it is a lease car. Is this normal practice? I previously had a lease car with VWFS and I am sure the private plate came back to me with my name on the certificate. My plate is quite valuable and I did not want to risk losing the plate at the end of my lease.

DVLA always put the name of the registered keeper on the retention certificate.
If the ease company is the registered keeper then it will be then named on the certificate.
They could have you named as nominee if they request that at the time they request the retention.

Whatever name is in the certificate seems to have no bearing when it comes to allocating the plate if it is done online.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I've noticed this in the past where my wife had a private number plate - it was allocated to our car which was in my name and then when we put car back on retention it was returned to me (with my name as grantee).

I guess my concern is if lease company refuse to return to me. I'm sure I am just being paranoid but don't want to risk losing the plate!

Wasn't there a thread on here a while ago concerning a private plate on a lease car ( or similar) and the hoops they had gto jump through or may still be doing, to get it back

I recall the one where someone in the leasing company nicked the reg and sold it.

I’m in the process of removing my plate just now, VWFS have sent me a letter confirming the only reason it’s in their name is because they are the registered owner of the car and that they have no further interest in the plate.
