Hi,

These seem like you get a good amount of car for around 15-18k and a lot are low mileage I'm finding on <50k mileage.

Is this just an undesirable motor or do they have any historic issues which I would find strange for a Honda?

Thanks

I was looking at these as well and they certainly seemed good value for money. There are no issues as far as I'm aware. The only thing I could think of was that they lacked the cachet of either the German margues or JLR models.

Yes, they are a bit 2010 inside, even with the decent ICE.

Tax not low on them though, just never get that a 1.6 could be 120 quid more a year than my 2.0 Passat.

This motor is definately on the shortlist.

There's nothing wrong with these but there are better SUV's out there for your budget, petrol or diesel?

Not fussed really, probably a diesel will win it.

I'm all eyes for recommendations on this price range.

Funny how you see one car you get into and then see them a fair bit everywhere all of a sudden.

Ford Edge Titanium 180 often overlooked but a very good spacious SUV, the only downside is that you'll only get a manual for your budget:

Volvo the only car that attracts me then I can't get over the 1990's look with the phone keypad.

I used a friend’s 2016 one for a while, it was quite a nice drive overall, reasonably well equipped and loads of room for sprog stuff. Not hugely dynamic but went alright for a family bus.

The 4th Gen CRV is a nice enough car but as usual there's limited engine choices, plus the AWD system is literally a driving aid and overheats quickly.

The 2 litre petrol with the ancient 5 speed automatic is lovely and refined around town, but when you hit the motorway you'll find yourself kicking down constantly just to keep up with traffic, which destroys fuel economy. I can't imagine the manual being much better.

The 2.2 diesel, even in iDTEC guise, is not the most refined engine and is manual only. The 1.6 diesel (higher power to get the AWD if memory serves) can be had with the 9 speed auto which is meant to be excellent. However, I'm sure I've read about dilution issues or something with this engine? Software updates may have sorted it.

There are some nice touches, such as doors which open very wide for easy access, seats which are at bum height so you literally slide horizontally into the car (no climbing up or falling in) and generally pretty robust and reliable. Whilst Honda's can still go wrong, my family and I have had loads and we've never had one leave us stranded - worst case limp mode but you still get home.

I would be more inclined to look at the 5th Gen at get the 1.5 petrol which has a turbo, something which Honda should have done way back with the 3rd gen petrol. Either that or go for the 2.0 petrol mild hybrid - although again I've heard that they sometimes don't set off in electric mode. Maybe a software update fixed that also.

Depending on what you want from a car though, I feel Honda is a little lost in the UK and I also felt that they forced emissions and economy on us rather than giving us the choice of engines like the German stuff. America seem to get all the good stuff from Honda (And Accura) although I'm pretty out of touch with Honda now.

The mk4 2.2 iDTEC is available with an automatic gearbox, a work colleague has one.

I wouldn't buy a 4 year old auto, asking for bills to me.

Why? 4 years old is hardly past it?

You`d rather buy a dual mass flywheel and a clutch instead?

You've got to be kidding.

I've got a 16 year old CRV on 150k miles that I use as a daily and it's biggest bill to date was £600. That was just for accumulated worn out parts like brakes, drop links, radiator and a few other little bits.

Having owned a plethora of Honda's, including 2 CRVs, covering 120k miles between the pair of them, I personally wouldn't compare a Honda product with anything manufactured by Ford, Renault or dare I say it, Volvo. Certainly if longevity, reliability, safety and comfort are what you are after, a well spec'd CRV is really quite hard to beat.

I bought a 2017 petrol CRV at the start of the year for just under £12k to replace an 07 Xc70. I only bought it because it was such good value and really basic as I was getting sick of ridiculous bills on the Volvo, especially as the auto gearbox had started being temperamental.

The Hondas great for tip runs, dog and other general family crap. It can be quite enjoyable having to ring its neck if you're in a hurry, especially as it has that typical Honda gear shift.
