Budget sub £20k - What Porsche would you buy
Discussion
Something able to daily, able to park up for a period with use of a daily practical car (so able to just start when needed) can be in garage trickle charger to help , able to go for a nice blast on a weekend, take to car meets.
I don’t mind open top or not
Manual or auto
Or are they a ticking time bomb with IMS, bore score in this budget ?
Even with ones done with upgrades of IMS, guess it could fail or still have bore score?
I actually like the look of the 987.1 cayman S.
981 boxster, but above £20k
I’ve been in a Panamera D and actually lovely and comfortable, but most being diesels at this money doesn’t appeal with DPF issues I’ve found and residuals of diesels.
2.7 cayman; just seems missing out to the S on mid range for that litre bit more fun.

987.1 Boxster 3.2S.
The 3.2 doesn’t suffer from bore scoring, as it used the earlier ferrous coated pistons.
The IMS bearing can be upgraded to the LN bearings ceramic unit (except on the very last few, that have the uprated ‘large’ IMS bearing).
You can expect the usual 987 problems - coolant cross-over pipes need replacing about every 10 - 12 years, and air con condensers & rads are very vulnerable so need replacing from time to time.
Routine servicing isn’t cheap, but you knew that anyway!

987.1 Cayman 2.7. No cruise, no Sport Chrono, no Satnav (don’t need any of that stuff) , not an S because the ride is too harsh and the 2.7 is fast enough, but it’s a Porsche and that’s good enough for me. Practical enough to take a week’s shopping, gets me to work every day and cost less than a new base model Fiesta. Love it.

Is that a true fact regarding bore score and the 3.2 engine? I understood that the 987.1 were affected. The 3.2 doesn’t suffer from bore scoring, as it used the earlier ferrous coated pistons.

I'd probably go for a 3.6 997 Carrera:

4.8S Panamera

At this price point a 370Z Nismo is a very good alternative & a cracking steer:

I think the sensible place to put your money is a Boxster/Cayman as suggested.
If you enjoy it then maybe look at a full fat 911 in the future but I’m guessing either of the above will suit you fine.
Really tough decision regarding the 911 as even though engine problems are blown out of proportion they do happen and a decent full rebuild will see you the wrong side of £10k.
Some cars with a rebuild do pop up now and again but are closer to £30k.

Can we presume you had an adequate b0rk fund in place? Or are we to assume this is literally all of your funds chucked in to the motor?
If you have sufficient liquidity to cover any eventuality, I'd go 911. Or, if you wanted to play it safe then I'd go with a decent low owner Boxster 2.7, spend the money on making it fresh again (dampers/bushings etc).
If you get a clean one that's well looked after, few previous owners and proper FPSH they're starting to appreciate. Especially if the car has the correct spec.
No idea what your car history is nor what you see as being quick, but that's my view.
I'd steer clear of the Panamera... Not sure how that's even without your search, you either want a car for the B roads, or you want something comfy to drive to Europe in. Very different.

I just nipped on autotrader

Porsche
Max price £20k
Then looked at the models available ——— 9 928’s some as low as £13k. That is a rather special car.
There are 8 968’s
There are also 14 Panameras.
I didn’t like the look of any of the 924’s personally.
Also there are 5 944 Turbos…. Plus some rather nice 944 soft tops
These I’d wager will not be losing any £ but also be rather nice to drive and somewhat different

996 3.4 is unlikely to bore score, and by now IMS is a diminishing risk, but it does still happen. The earlier the better. Replacements can and do fail too not least because installation in situ is brutal and was never designed to happen. Depends who did it and which kit.
996 3.6 is more likely to bore score and IMS far less of a risk. The later the better.
Anecdotally autos bore score more because they pull away in second.
I’d go 996. If it came to it, which car would you rather put a £10k rebuild into?
Beware that with Boxster and 996 the cost of inevitable suspension, cooling system and a/c work can easily exceed four figures each time. Some are starting to rust too.
