I've never done this before.
Is it something worth the risk?
buying a used car from auction sites (private sellers) without seeing (due to long distance) and arranging for it to be delivered.
is there any way to get the car checked by a mechanic before delivery?

Is it worth the risk? No way.

Always see a car before buying it. All used cars are different, even if two have the same dates, mileage, spec etc.

was it from a company or private?
so you just bought it based on info available from seller and it was delivered to you?

Yes ideally that's what I'd like to do but with used cars on eBay etc nationwide it's not possible unless I only limit the search to to local / within 20 miles area.

Take a day off work and go see them. If you can pay someone to inspect then you can afferent travel to see it in person.

You'll wish you had done when it all goes wrong.

Used car from ebay, sight unseen? You must be mad unless it's from a very reputable dealer.

with full service history from main dealer, receipt of recent parts replaced etc..even if I travel there my self, won't be as good as a mechanic inspecting it (under the car etc)

What price point are we talking here?

If I was auctioning a car on eBay and someone wanted to send the AA or another big name company round to inspect it before the end of the auction then sure, why not, I wouldn’t mind that. Then again, I work 100% from home. All you can do is ask.

An inspection after the auction ends or from some random garage? Jog on.

Is £2.2k a big deal for you and can you afford to lose it?

Just ask the seller if they are happy for an independent inspection if that’s what you want.

That said, even on a cheaper inspection (e.g. clickmechanic) you’re going to be paying a fair chunk of the car’s value and it will then be a chunk on top for transport too.

Make sure you know what you’re paying for, a lot of the cheaper inspections they don’t even get the car in the air.

I’d wait for something local if you really can’t travel and can’t afford to write off the purchase cost TBH.

I bought our Nissan leaf sight unseen from Facebook. Cost 5k then £150 to get it delivered via Shipley.com

They are pretty low risk given the lack of moving parts.

Apart from the air con failing shortly after it arrived (the way it was bought wouldn't have changed that) and the few dings and scratches (that were declared) it's been one of the best cars we've ever owned....purely for reasons around it being the free car for nipping to the shops and wife's commuter.

Actually I know exactly what my rights (or lack of them) are after buying it.
it’s only common process of buying cars online is that I’m unfamiliar with.
