Hi all - I’d appreciate your respective thoughts on a position i now find myself in. Basically I ordered a Mustang back in July and was told it would be Nov or Dec for delivery (due to chip shortages). I had a car that I was going to part ex and was given 3 options (i) part ex more or less there and then and go without a car for several months (ii) delay part ex until when my new car was ready however it would be £x minus £4k!! or (iii) sell it privately nearer the time (which is what i went with).

Skip forward to just last week and with 2nd hand prices starting to drop away I fiund a buyer for my car but reached out to the dealer to see if there was a build date yet for the Mustang. I was told they had been given a 4/11 date but it was unlikely as there was no VIN info however it would still be this year! So on that basis I sold mine and persuaded my better half that we could share her car for just a few weeks. Yesterday i got a call from the dealership who had been advised by Ford that my build was now on hold as they (Ford) were now concentrating on 2022 builds only and whilst i would definitely get my spec and that the price increase that would inevitably come would be borne by them it would be April (earliest) before I’d get my car! To say I’m annoyed is an understatement, the dealer knew i was selling on the basis that i would be car-less for a few weeks, it just seems a little too coincidental that a few days later i get a call from them with news of further delays. Anyone any thoughts / what would you do? Do you think its worth trying for some sort of loan car (I don’t care how basic) for those months as an option?

TIA

Realistically your best option is to find a cheap runabout with 12 months MOT on whatever free ads site you choose to use for circa £1000. I highly doubt your dealer will do anything to put you in a loan car etc, such is the market at the moment they can likely sell your ordered car to another customer if you decided to pull out of the deal.

Perfect time for a bit of winter shedding, plus your shiny new car will last a bit longer be delivered in spring rather than winter.Get on the shed thread!

Dealer isn't going to do anything I'm afraid to say, they haven't caused the delay and they wont have a spare car for a long term loan.
Please remember that the dealership doesn't get paid a penny for selling you a vehicle until that vehicle is on your drive, they want you to have the vehicle more than you want it believe me, I'm a main dealer!

Your best bet is as above, find a cheap runabout for the interim period, you could ask the dealership if they have and cheap auction vehicles that they might be able to sell you, or look at a buy back scheme on a used car.

Good luck whatever you do.

Many thanks for everyone's comments, spoke to the dealer yesterday and April is actually looking more like May! Have agreed to confirm my position at the weekend, that gives me a little time to have a look around at possible options and if nothing then proceed with the order (and possibly find a little runaround)

1) Buy a ratty old MX-5
2) Spend the winter practicing drifting on the cold damp tarmac
3) Take the Mustang to car shows next summer without mowing down spectators on departure

Hi…. Going to have a scout around the ads etc over the weekend for a suitable runaround for 6 months. Many thanks to those of you who have put forward your suggestions / comments and also searched out a few examples, really appreciate it.
