I have a deposit down with my local dealership for the new RR. My preferred car is the plug-in hybrid but I’m a bit of an impatient sod and don’t want to wait until 2023 at the earliest. The vehicle it’ll replace is beginning to creak!
I’ve been offered an early delivery car for spring next year. It’ll be one of the first on the road and I’ve accepted it. HSE spec, belgravia green, perlino interior. It’s a stunning looking vehicle. It’s also the bigger 3.0 Diesel engine.
Given the world right now, my thoughts are to run it for a year or two and change over to the hybrid in 2023.
With supply chain issues it’d be largely depreciation free motoring. Slightly nervous however on the market for any diesel in 2023.
What would other PHers do?

Diesel isn't going anywhere for at least 5-10 years as haulage has no pathways to live without it.
I wouldn't be so certain that you'll be depreciation free though, I would expect more ULEZ type enforcements of no diesels on private car owners.
Still, given some of the stories about ordered cars taking 11+ months from LR right now, you're unlikely to beat this option. If you're set on a new FFRR, I would go for it as you'll be waiting a long time otherwise.

I wouldn’t bank on it being even low depreciation mate. The economy can turn in a matter of days. I’ve been offered an early delivery car for spring next year. Thanks for the replies so far folks.
My hope on the depreciation comes from buyers who have paid deposits for build slots being told they’ll be waiting until late 2022 for delivery. At least with these vehicles they’re LR specced cars for that initial cohort to the dealer network so limited supply and string demand may take effect? As per the Defender.
Still, who can second guess anything right now?

Surely the first principle of gambling applies;
Only gamble what you can afford to lose.
If you’re gambling it won’t depreciate because you can’t afford it, then walk away.
If you can afford it - but hope it doesn’t as it’s a giggle beating the system (“all cars depreciate like a hot brick” etc) then go for it.

(Returning long term user - I had given up as this place has become a lot more toxic, but that's a different story...)
I have an L460 on order, I anticipate it to be as near to depreciation free as possible. There is a batch expected March/April off the back of opening orders, and then line change to align with the Jan additions to spec (I.e. electric doors etc). If people want one once they see them on the roads they will have to pay for it as the lead times will be 6-8 minimum. People were waiting nearly a year for a fatty before Covid when certain options were configured.
My L405 AB and Velar both disposed of recently, and neither cost me anything in depreciation - the opposite.
I have ordered p400, which is no more expensive than the D350 with the current GFV set very reasonably: can you not change?
I wonder how many on here are serial JLR owners - as the generic "loses loads of money; will break" is not the reality.

That won't be depreciation free. Not even close.
I may have been overly ambitious in my first post. I’ve a sneaky feeling that it may be close. Not at 2 years old if the P400 takes that long but quite conceivably at 1 year old.Take a look at the entirety of the LR range right now and where prices are sitting.
This semi-conductor shortage isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

A big DERV RR will lose money like crazy
They aren’t just now and they certainly aren’t at a year old. Have you seen used prices!A big DERV RR will lose money like crazy

My 992 is in a similar situation. 18 months old and I’d still get back what I paid for it. These aren’t normal times.
Personally, I think it's a big gamble prices will still be so strong in 2023. If supply chain issues are starting to be resolved then people will want to wait rather than paying over list for an almost two year old car.
Only you can decide how lucky you feel and if you're willing to potentially dump a load of cash.

Happy for you if yours hasn’t broken, but, the stats don’t lie… they are hardly reliable machines…
I’ve clearly been lucky. My approach with this has and will remain the same. If it’s broken, the dealership collect in, replace it with an alternative vehicle and bring it back to me once it’s fixed. It’s really not worth my anxiety.Dolf Stoppard said:

I should have perhaps approached this thread differently. I don’t expect the car at two years to be worth what I paid for it.Only you can decide how lucky you feel and if you're willing to potentially dump a load of cash.
I was looking to establish some consensus on whether there has actually ever been a better time to but a FFRR. I’m inclined to think that this is actually the case. Should I come to sell it at the two year point and depreciation be somewhere north of £10k per year then I’ll be happy. I may be surprised.
