My wife hates big cars and anything over 4m is big for her...she also quite like the security of 4wd and need a 5 door car.

The budget is £20K max and ideally, I would like something that has more than 200bhp, is less than 3 years old and manual.

It seems that only the Audi S1 will fit the bill

Any other options?

I think you've missed one of the most crucial requirements....Length <4m. They are both at least 10% over.

I personally would certainly question the extent of "security" that 4WD brings to a car of that size, particularly with a driver who doesn't feel comfortable driving anything bigger than a supermini.....and certainly on something like an S1 which will have comparatively wide summer tyres (as the default option), which will achieve naff all in ice/snow, if that is indeed the concern here....

Something 2WD with a set of winter wheels/tyres would be my recommendation, thus opening up a few more options....and probably save you a few quid too considering your otherwise cornered into an S1. Something like a Fiesta ST perhaps....? Clio RS? (Sorry I couldn't tell you whether they fit the budget mind you, but would like to hope so...)

You're making a lot of compromises in a sub-4m AWD car. Even as a 5dr it won't be very practical because the AWD eats boot space. The S1 has a tiny boot

I've also missed both are auto only.

4m is a small car. I didn't think the A class was big.

Get something reasonable and tell her it’s 4m

I was in the market with almost exactly the same
requirements, including price, age, 5 doors and rigid 4m length limit; but not necessarily 4WD.
Ended up with 2016 S1, the short list included Mini S also.

It’s a lovely car, which my gf really enjoys as do I. Great build quality. Might take it to ABT for 310bhp remap.

If you can convince her to go just over 4m then you could have a Nissan Juke or Golf R.

My Mrs doesn’t feel happy in big cars, she drives a Mini and a Vitara, the Vitara is same length as a Juke and only about a hands width shorted than a Golf R

Why does it have to be a five door the B Pillar robs entrance & exit space, if you want this size of car get the Fiesta ST & I'd forgo the AWD:

Or I'd go for a Q30 Sport I'm sure it'll pass even though it's 40cm over 4M:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111099...

but they are Auto.

F54 Clubman is 20cm or so over. Just tell her it's 4m long and get her to go for a drive.

I ended up with the S1 as well. Loved the car but boot was useless and it looked weird as a 5dr. So upgraded to a RS Q3 which is only c.40cm longer. You will struggle to get a nice one for 20k now.

Surely any reasonably competent driver can get used to a car the size of a golf / 1 series / A class etc.

There must be some man maths around depreciation that can make a GR Yaris the right answer here.

3 door but does just sneak in under 4m (3,950 mm). It’s a surprisingly big ‘Supermini’. Also doesn’t quite fit the budget, with a price range of £32-41,000.

Forget the security aspect of AWD, it’s the electronic stability systems that provide that. Turn it all off and AWD can be more of a handful when things get out of shape.

Go FWD and you have lots of great options for five door hot hatches.

What is the reason behind 4x4? Just from what I've seen you are better off FWD with winter tyres than 4x4 with summer?

Heard of the system in Estonia where the garage keeps your wheels for you and changes them in Nov and Apr (ish) each year to be compliant. Seems like a great idea.
