Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new car ( used one ) and I'm really not sure where to go.

I want something that's economical as my journey to work and back is around 60 miles mainly on the motorway. I'm open to diesel or petrol depending on the economy they offer.

I'd like something no older than 2016 and I'd like cruise control (adaptive would be a bonus) and other bits such as parking sensors, heated windscreen etc would be a bonus.

To give you an idea of my taste, I like the look of Golf GTD, Audi A3 or A4 S line, the new shape Ford Focus, Octavia VRS and BMW 1 series.

As I said in the title my maximum budget would be up to 18k. Open to suggestions including whether the ones I've added above would be good choices or not.

Haven't you already made a couple of threads with this kind of request recently?

A GTE doesn’t stack up if you are covering 16,000 miles a year, best to go with the GTD, unless you can charge at home and at work.

I disagree and not just from an ecionoical perspective.

On a very long run the GTE will do 55mpg. Factor in the 20 to 30 mile electric range and the winner is clear

Ok, well let’s just agree to disagree. I’m saying this as an Audi A3 e-tron owner too, which is essentially the same car. I just don’t think it’s suitable for his needs. With the battery depleted they really are not that great - looking at more like 35-45 mpg, so little benefit over a normal petrol.

Now try that journey with a low battery rather than a full one. Let’s see what kind of mpg you get then.

Volvo V60 or V90. I bought a 68 plate V90 for £18,200 main dealer 22k miles. adaptive cruise, self steer all standard fit. heated windscreen, seats and steering wheel. 50mpg

I had a 1.6 TDi Golf which was fairly well equipped a few years ago. Comfortable, economical and had adaptive cruise control. Can easily do 60mpg without having to drive carefully. (Hypermiling and you can get 80mpg).

Not the fastest in the world or exciting but one of those cars which I’ve done eight hours of driving in one day before and not felt achy and exhausted afterwards.

The issue with going for an A3 albeit a better looking vehicle and a nicer interior, options like adaptive cruise control is hard to come by and things like parking sensors are optional extras and again hard to come by.
