Golf 2.0 TDI GT 2014 - help a very indecisive PH'er!
Discussion
Bah! For the third flaming time, I'm considering buying a relative's 2014 Golf TDI 150 GT. I currently have a 2018 Audi S3, 2017 Skoda Fabia and 2013 VW Transporter.
It's my father-in-law's car and has done 82k, obviously with a known history and good spec. It's a low-bork manual with nice optional wheels, £20 annual tax and no known issues. He's getting £7k trade-in against a 2018 petrol Golf, due to ULEZ.
On the one hand, it would be silly because it would be used for ~5-6k miles p/a and we live next to an upcoming Clean Air Zone. It would mean selling my S3 as it overlaps - no more fun for me. I wouldn't be able to resist refurbishing the Golf's alloys and bodywork to the tune of ~£1k.
On the other hand, for some unknown reason I've always coveted this Golf. I don't need the money back, but the financials look attractive.... I'd net ~£17k in the bank after selling the S3 and buying / refurbishing the Golf - and my business expenses / low depreciation would effectively make running it "free". I don't really have much opportunity for fun in the S3 and this Golf with a remap is realistically all the performance I need. The Golf is still a decent car and I could drive it around the CAZ.
The thing that's different from before is that I now have an auto Fabia for town driving.
Similar but not identical car:

Help me decide! Thanks

Thanks chaps.
The single thing that appeals most is that the Golf is a little shabby. I'd love to get my hands on it... to correct the paint, refurbish the alloys, attend to some scrapes and give it a deep clean inside. It's a strange pleasure. It's also rare that this pleasure overlaps with being good value and good to drive - sometimes I can hit two of these three criteria, but often just one!
So, yes, I'd miss some driving pleasure if I sold the S3 and ended up with a diesel Golf. That said, I took the S3 out today for the first time in 10 days and I had no real occasion to. Most of my mileage in it is with work or visiting my ageing parents.
I do intend to keep the Fabia as our ULEZ-compliant runabout, having proven itself perfect in this role since buying it this summer.
