Next year I'm looking to do a bunch of driver-oriented road trips including the NC500.

Won't be used for daily driving duties but as I'll be covering 1500mi+ at a time in it, got to be bearably comfortable?

I'm looking to spend max £55k on something wild, hopefully with low depreciation as I'll probably move it on in a year or so, unless I fall in love! Which as happened haha.

Currently run an E92 M3 modified for track (love the noise and handling), F10 M5 (love the ridiculous speed & comfort on the motorway, but very bulky) and a Tesla Model 3 Performance (love the 0-60 times and love running costs, but feels cheap inside and emotionless).

I initially was looking at picking up an F83 M4, but I really did not like it after test driving. The noise and feel just weren't there for me, though very quick and capable.

I keep circling back to 911 991 carrera s/4s or 911 997 turbo?

Worried the 991 won't feel fast enough or that the 997 will feel too dated? Gotta arrange a test drive!

Any ideas? smile

NC500 roads are a little compromised. Suits a Morgan very well. Old V8 would be great for those roads, a new-chassied, BMW powered PlusFour would be the comfy option,
More 'touring' than hardcore driving and not the answer you're looking for!

I found my relationship with my M4 a bit odd... I loved so many things about it and yet never managed to love the car. I actually enjoyed the i30N I got after it far, far more.

You mentioned the NC500, but what other drives are you considering and will they be solo? Suggestions are likely to be somewhat different depending on the potential destinations and luggage requirements. I can't help but have a hankering for a F-Type V8 and I think if I was able to stretch to the SVR I would, even if it does have a rather obnoxious exhaust it's just a beauty in my eyes.

For whatever reason I find Porsche a little bland, but I have to admit the following and love they receive can't all be wrong. Thankfully what makes a car great is so subjective that we get to have a variety of options instead of a default 'best' car for any one job.

I wanted the same but less budget and purchased a Lotus Evora

Looked at 911 etc... but they were a little bland and boring unless you were spending big money

If i were you i would look at the Lexus RCF, Jag F Type & the Alpine A110

Happy hunting!

I guess it depends how focussed a drive you want compared to taking in the scenery (i.e. a sports car or a GT).

The 456 is a good shout-though try to source a manual if possible.

A 612 is another option though a bit marmite in terms of looks (I happen to like them)

They certainly are. £83k must be near enough the list price when new 10 years ago

I saw a Morgan Works recently at C&M, and I would choose one for this brief.

Richard Thorne has one for sale inside your budget. Depreciation proof.

There are few cars that are worse suited to being pushed hard through clifftop corners in Scottish weather!

involving though. and that's the joy for some of us. no esc, rear axle just under your butt.
took mine in September. it rained. great fun. proper road trip stuff.

the alternative I would take would be a hot hatch. hatch or a Mog suit NC500 very well. Pork/AM/Ferrari less so I think.

Yep sporting for sure. Especially with the plastic windows rattling and rain pissing through the roof at speed! The pram wheels would have me driving at 60% though even with a Ford Focus engine! TBH it'd be a hoot for a day out but 1500 miles would take years off my life :-) But you're probably made of sterner stuff (seriously)

fond memories! that and roof down when rain starts wondering whether to stop to put roof up or drive through it.
seriously, it was a great trip. did Applecross in both directions in one day and it was heaven in a proper open top. we escaped London early on a Sunday morning to reach Richmond, NY for lunch. south east traffic def no fun in a mog. just getting to Scotland is a schlepp.
A 911 would have eaten the whole trip with ease, but....

Where's your sense of adventure?! Life's too short for boring cars, a car like this would make the trip far more special than most other cars.

Probably ensconced in a 997 Carrera 4S ;-)

Agree. I don't think anyone is advocating a boring car on this thread?

PH User said:

Bit of a straw man argument. A Morgan makes a trip to ASDA more special than most other cars. We are discussing on this thread a tour through the northern highlands and what might be the best car for the job. Now I respect anyone that would take the journey in a Morgan, Robin Reliant, electric unicycle etc, but I'd happen to want to have a car that could cope with being driven reasonably hard on wet cold roads in Wester Ross. Just personal opinion.
