Ive tried to px my car for another and being realistic and working on previous transactions I expected a grands difference between retail price and px price. However it now seems the difference is 2.5k!

So between buying your old car and selling you a new one they want on average a 5k profit!

Are they having a laugh? Needless to say my cars stayed with me!

A living fine, Financial rape, no.
A grands difference between retail and buying in should be ample.

What’s the value of your car vs the one your buying?

What would WBAC give you compared thr dealer? The same or vastly different ?

So you expected a thousand mark up, so less vat that would equate to circa £800 profit.

From that they potentially need to inspect / service / prep it and stick a warranty on the car. Which will use up all of that.

Are you buying a £3000 car from a back street trader?

You need to stop being taken for a mug if you thing someone offering 2.5k less for your car than retail price is ok. Let me guess you in/around London?

Then they prep it, advertise it, spend time dealing with the customer/ finance company etc, put a warranty on it.

Pay for staff wages, pay for premises, pay tax on any profit, electricity, gas, water, business rates. The list goes on….and then the horror! They may want some money for themselves and their family.

This ^^^^ also, potentially, car doesn't sell for age meaning dead money (still has to be insured, maintened and staff paid for not to mention rent/rates/etc)

Are we talking a £5k cart or a £50k car?

It doesn't sound that excessive for a trade in value, it's always been known to be the worst financial option, but that's what the convenience costs. Maybe they also don't want your car/it's not something they would retail do that then needs to auction it/pass along in the trade.

“Should be ample.”

Shall we let everyone on Pistonheads decide what would be ample for your salary?

Car dealers can make what they want. If prices are too high people won’t buy. But ample? Who decides what is ample?

no what you need to do is sell you car privately and buy another one privately - you then cut out the dealer completely

I would have thought market forces would decide that. Like I said I walk cause I thought the dealer making a 2.5k profit out of a (retail 5k) car was too much.

Your car could be a total shed and they don’t want it scratchchin

Anyway, try WBAC or Motorway, they will take it for what it’s worth.

Gross profit v net profit, they won't be making £2.5k net.
There will also be vehicles they make nothing on or even a loss
