Why will it be a money pit?

I bought a 64 plate Megane three years ago for £4k with 100k on the clock. It's about to clock 200k and has only had to have a replacement injector and routine servicing. It owes me nothing and still looks great.

Are they actually a good car? Renault is French so assumes it would fall apart.

If she can get by with 2 seats, how about a Honda CR-Z?

Petrol/Hybrid- v.reliable and good looks, handling. Fun car.

It's a 1.5 dci so I think so. It does 55mpg everywhere, nothing has broken, the radio is a bit rubbish, but it's comfortable and loads of bootspace (it is an estate). Here it is...

Something unfashionable like the Megane might make sense in the current crazy world of secondhand cars.
Given the choice between a 15 reg average miles Megane and a 10 reg average miles Golf (both are about £5k), I'd take the Megane on the grounds it's so much newer.
It might be better to go for something unfashionable which has a better reputation for reliability like a Toyota Auris or Kia Ceed, but if a Megane is all working properly at 6-7 years old the chance of it expiring shortly after is fairly low. The dodgy ones will probably have already failed spectacularly by that point. Do make sure that everything electrical works and take it for a proper test drive though....

I'd think a £5k TT is much more likely to be a money pit?

Nothing wrong with a Megane really. You could show her some Japanese options like a Civic or Auris for a bit more reliability. But if she likes the Renaulr you're probably on a hiding to nothing.

This car will be a money pit, the electronics will stop working after 1000 miles, are there any good looking cars that i can show her instead of this Megane.

Was thinking about a TT. Budget up to around 5k, she prefers Coupes.
They're good reliable cars, you're confusing preconceptions/old stereotypes with the reality that they're good.

The other option is the Astra GTC in either petrol or diesel form.

If you're going for a diesel Megane it's worth looking for the 1.9dci in GT spec:

Petrol wise the 1.4T is the one to lookout for:

The 1.6i is good but you have to work it a bit harder but it does get you a newer Megane.

Another option is a CLC.

I don't care. It's a taxi. It paid for itself in three months. I'm not remotely emotionally attached to it.

My parents have one, honestly it isn't that bad, it does 60mpg, the only work we have ever had to do on it was the reg/rec on the alternator, cost £40, they're not great cars, boot is quite small, but if you just need a car that is cheap on everything then throwaway when you're done with it, they're not bad.

Problem is she wants it as a car to keep for a while.

They're a good car & I'd say you can (& I've got nice ones for around your budget) get nice ones from exactly your budget, it's a case of choosing the drivetrain that suit's your budget.

They're both good options I wouldn't take one over the other it would just be about finding the best car for your needs/budget.

Is the GTC better than the megane? I've never had a Vauxhall.

I wanted to stick with petrol as less to go wrong.

Less to go wrong?

Don't agree with that.

How many miles does she drive each week?

What's her usage? There are more good petrol options with the GTC at this price point than the Megane so it'll probably be easier to find a nice one.
