Current shed just scrapped through its mot with many adversaries and not worth me fixing them. So time for a new shed.

Looking at the bottom of the barrel Xc90. What do I need to know and what would I be letting myself in for?

I bought one for under £2k a couple of years ago sight unseen off ebay and had it delivered. Generally it was a dog but worked fine though had a "Power Steering Service Required" message that I ignored for a while.

Eventually looked it up and turns out it's a pretty well known and major problem that wasn't worth fixing but managed to get my £2k back for it. Had it at a local garage for a look over and it ran out of diesel - apparently a massive pain in the arse due to where the fuel pump is so best not to let that happen!

I should know being a bit of a Volvo fan but is this the 4WD model?
Seem to recall a lot of people disconnecting due to transfer box failure?

DEM module for haldex is a common issue on the XC models. £150 refurb, so not the end of the world. Think the actual mechanicals are A-ok for the 4WD system.

D5 unit is cracking. Give the geartronic box a good stir and make sure all is working and otherwise go for it. I picked up a cheap 2005 XC70 D5 for daily duties recently and it's been spot on!

We ran an 03 plate D5 XC90 for about 5 years. Was generally good, but from memory, the 4wd system was crap and broke. Cost about £1500 to repair at a specialist.

Handbrake was always an issue at MOT time - never strong enough.

Then we had common diesel issues - injectors stuck, turbo failure at about 120k miles. Eventually it self combusted.

Was a good family car though, just got very expensive towards the end. Replaced by a Disco 4, which has been much more reliable.

Bought one around 5 yrs old with FSH was the most expensive and also the most unreliable car I ever owned and I've owned many TVRs

Numerous electrical issues and crank oil seal failure, famous for RWD not working

The radio didn't work properly - it's uses fibre optic cables apparently and was a £1500 fix (needless to say I didn't bother)

Thankfully I bought it when prices were depressed by the financial crisis and sold on for a profit - hateful thing

I'd rather take my chances with a Range Rover (actually I bought a nice, simple V8 Jeep)

I can't help feeling a bottom of the barrel anything is potentially a bad idea that could end being a false economy. A bottom of the barrel, old, complex, diesel SUV seems like a brave pill. Also, from my experience of driving my sisters 2009 185BHP D5 auto, these are awful to drive. There's a real lag getting moving from standstill and even the 185BHP variant only has "just" enough go. A 163 would be even worse.

What is your budget? Do you particularly like the SUV shape or just the Volvo. Is ULEZ a factor?

Budget up to £2k, must be a 4x4 and that’s about the only criteria. Dog bus, local driving and supermarket car parks will be the most it will do

Get a Jeep - V8 on LPG or the diesel - Merc 2.7 engine

although a Rav4 would probably be better - I went Jeep as I tow

You'd probably find a lot of cheap XC90's aren't actually AWD as failures are common and can be costly if you rely on garages, more so garages who aren't that sure - but basically you can choose from:

DEM failure due to internal corrosion - about £150 refurbished on exchange or £300 to buy refurbished outright
Haldex pumps can seize, more so if they've been lying dormant due to other AWD issues or neglect
Rear diffs can fail due to neglect
Angle gear sleeve is sacrificial and the teeth can fail - £150 from Volvo plus labour (Anything from 2hrs to 2 days depending)
Angle gear itself can fail of the teeth wear - a few hundred quid to a few thousand again, depending...

Then you've got all the other associated XC90 based issues like they very hard on their suspension, steering and tyres and with neglect sorting that out can be uneconomical. The Geartronic boxes can be well documented for failure / crappy manners and it's not often a simple oil service resolves that. They also have their share of electrical issues - ABS faults, CEM issues, infotainment concerns.

Basically it's like any otehr big, complex Volvo (or indeed car) of that price bracket / complexity when new and thus with age, miles and a few owners who try and run them on a budget of 75p a year... there are an abundance of sheds out there. And not sheds as in endeeringly cheap old cars to smoke around. As in proper sheds, binners... absolute financial suicide, cars you buy and run into the ground and prey you get lucky or cars that will ruin you. But you may also get lucky and get a good one but that'll take deeper pocket or a lot of luck.

Great cars when they're in good order and working well but when they're not, best place for it is the bottom of the sea,

Seems like it could end up being a shed load of trouble. Only wanted one as they seem to come well equipped and are a decent size should I need to fit stuff into it.

Current shed a mML 270, like it and it has the low range option but it requires about £800 with of work and as I paid £1300 for it it seems daft to sort it. Mate offered me what I paid for it.

Never had a jeep. Are they any good?

£800 to fix up a vehicle you know and like, compared to buying an unknown quantity is a no-brainer for me. Fix up your Merc.

I would far rather have a Jeep than an ML or any land rover product

Each to their own. The 2 Jeeps I have had were awful to drive.

A Discovery and ML is a far nicer experience.

They are more basic - and reliable which is where 4x4 started but which jeeps did you have as I've had a few and they are great, for what they are

A car will drive far better than an ML or Disco and pretty much anything will be more reliable and cheaper to run than both

For the money that looks great.

If I was after a winter hack, I'd be very tempted with that.

I've had 2 XC90s but they were both £10k+ so not bottom of the barrel and were very reliable if a little expensive to run (£585 tax, 30mpg on a run, 25 around town).
My cousin has had a manual for over 10 years and it's still going on 180k miles.
It's used as a 3rd car for tip runs and dog walks but he loves it.

It hasn't been cheap to run and has had to have the 4WD system and gearbox repaired (transfer box?).

But as a car run on a budget I wouldn't advise getting one.

Alternatives:

Sorento

CRV big enough?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111229...

Grand Cherokee
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106063...

Brave pill but looking at the MOT history it's passed the last 5 MOTs with no advisories so has been looked after. It has 4 days left but says it will come with long MOT which is a bonus.
£340 tax but 20 mpg max I would think smile
