Cowboy main dealer
Discussion
So after 6 months of waiting, my wife went to our local Ford Main dealer to get the final invoice and agree payment for her new Mach-e.
The OTR price has increased significantly since last year, from starting at 46k to now starting at 52k.
Imagine my surprise when she messaged to let me know that the original sale price forgot to include the VAT and we'd have to pay an extra 9k. They were adamant this was correct, and nothing they could do.
Seems they also forgot we'd ordered the car online while in the dealership and the on-line invoice I managed to access showed OTR at 46k.
After a hurried and rather loud conversation on the phone they went away, and called back 20 minutes later to say it was an unfortunate error by the sales manager "who no longer works here", and the price was what we thought it was.
How many car dealers seriously give a retail customer an invoice without VAT on it, particularly when the whole sale had been done online as an OTR ttransaction?
Is this (blame a non existent sales manager) the car dealer version of a builders gran dying conveniently when they don't want to turn up?
I wonder how many little old ladies they've tried this on with, and it's only an error when it's noticed?

Dealers try it on with everything, its their job to maximise profit, this ford chap seams quite reasonable compared to every parasite i have spoken to at BMW dealerships
When i picked my A45 the merc dealer had a by appointment VIP gold sale on, golden tickets, red carpet into the showroom, gold balloons and price tags, cars behind gold poles and velvet rope and once in a life time discounts
except the discount on the A45 they had was 7k less than what i had negotiated lol
one born every minute

If you go on Autotrader there are lots of MACH-E advertised at the older price and lots at the newer price.
So maybe your dealer has no stock of the older priced MACH-E and can only sell you one at the new price.
In which case I'd find another dealer who still has stock at the lower price.
I assume they're both the same car?
It looks like all they're guilty of is selling all the cars of the type you wanted and trying to sell you a differently priced one whilst making up a false excuse to justify it.

Goes both ways sometimes, we waited so long for an in demand car that the list price had (I think) gone up 3 times before it arrived and they had also changed their computer system.
I pointed out they charged the wrong base price of the car when we picked it up and they quickly refunded £1000. They did however forget to charge me for £600 of extras, I may have been slower to point this out, I’m not sure if they heard me….

I understand what you mean, but no, this is a new car we've been tracking for 6 months while it's been on the boat, in Antwerp etc, and finally in LiverpoolSo maybe your dealer has no stock of the older priced MACH-E and can only sell you one at the new price.

That’s scandalous, clearly trying it on and I’d be kicking up a stink about it, although I suppose if they dug their heels in they could just not sell you the car and return any deposit paid?
A little like VW who discovered an oil leak whilst my van was in for a service and wanted £750 to fix it, which is the going rate for this quite well known repair.
When I asked about a warranty repair I was told that my van was three months outside the warranty and unfortunately VW weren’t prepared to make a contribution to the bill even though I have mdsh.
Imagine their surprise when I reminded them that I have a 5 year extended warranty that was purchased at the same time as I bought the van.
I fail to believe my chassis number didn’t have the extended warranty details attached to their system, obviously hoping I’d just pay the bill without question.

I think in our case they rolled over quite quickly when confronted, because my wife was a (quite senior) ex ford engineer at Dunton, so knows a few people who could make their lives less comfortable.A little like VW who discovered an oil leak whilst my van was in for a service and wanted £750 to fix it, which is the going rate for this quite well known repair.

I'm just surprised they tried it at all
Same thing happened to me with a Toyota main dealer - was looking to change my old car and was given a reasonable price for a Corolla hybrid service loan car they had.
I'd driven the actual car when mine was being serviced, so didn't need a test drive.
Was sorting things out over email with the sales person, trade in price sorted and ready to finalise finance at the last stage when they dropped the bomb that by they way they had 'forgotten' to include VAT!
I wonder how many people would go ahead anyway if they had set their heart on a particular new car?
Luckily it was just transport to me, not only did they end up losing the sale I also lost faith in the dealer and ended up buying a brand new Honda instead (no doughnuts in their carpark to show them.)
