Hi

My family has outgrown the school run Mini Cooper s
Wife wants a mid size suv - ideas being a used q5, x3, evoque.
Or do we lease a new one?
Or do we go electric?

She only does 3k miles and year and car gets pretty messed up with the kids and general school parking.

Help and advice appreciated.

Personally I’d get something cheapish and used.

My family car is a Volvo XC40. Carries 5. I don’t care that it get filthy inside as it’s only a car and can be cleaned. And it does the family thing really well and in comfort.

I had the previous generation XC60 (66 plate) that also does a good job and I better than the q5 and evoque IMO

You don't mention budget, new/used, etc.

Depending how big you need to go, I'd thoroughly recommend the Peugeot 3008 / 5008. Cheaper and better specced as standard than the Germans, and not very far off in terms of quality. My missus preferred her 67 plate 5008 GT Line to her current 69 plate Q5 Sport and I'm inclined to agree with her.

If she only does minimal mileage & they trash the car then there's no need to spend the full budget just look for some low mileage SUV's.

Second the shout for a Kia Sportage. Had one at work for going on 6 years now. Used and abused. Short, low speed journeys predominantly so I really feared the worst for a modern diesel but it’s been absolutely bulletproof. Not the most modern inside but if you intend to keep it for a while, that might not be a bad thing.

Must it be SUV though? Opening up to a hatch offers much more choice

We are on our second 5008, great cars and perfect for family trips etc, we have 3 kids and they love having 3 separate seats in the back, the 2 extra seats in the boot come in useful too.

I had a 67 plate GT Line and now have a 21 plate GT and both are lovely inside, the newer ones now have a flocked alcantara dash panel which looks posh smile.

The safest car you can afford! (See my recent thread..)

I'm looking at another Discovery or an xc90 to replace our smashed up Disco.

With your brief I'd be looking at an XC60.

+1
In laws have 2014 Sportage. Used everyday as a work horse and survived everything grand kids threw at it over the years. Theirs is diesel with all bells and whistles, cheap to run and insure.

Don't get a diesel given your low mileage and short frequent journey pattern.
Naturally aspirated petrol engine upto 1.6 ltr will be best for that driving pattern.

The N/A 1.6 is gutless & has to be worked hard, the 1.6T is the pick.

But we're talking about school runs and messy stuff not long cruises and holiday trips.

Why add turbo into the complication which run better when up to temperature and longer runs but not so good on frequent short cold engine trips?

I don't have kids but I remember being a kid and I'm sure my brother, my sister and I didn't trash our parents car when we were kids. We weren't allowed to eat in it which probably helped a lot.

Even on short trips you'll be working that 1.6 hard if you don't want the complication of a turbo then get the 2.0i but the low down torque of the turbo suits the car better.

Same here. My stepson, however, is allowed by his mother to get away with basically rendering the passenger seat unusable by anyone else not in a hazmat suit. Not to mention the empty packets and other crap in every possible stuffhole.
