Main dealer sold me a car but don’t have v5
Discussion
I was meant to pick up my new used car from a 3 pointed star main dealer. Transferred the money, changed my insurance from my current car to the new one as they need proof of insurance before they can give the car over. While at my handover it turns out they don’t have the V5 from the previous owner and it could take up to 6 weeks to receive one from DVLA.
Dealer have offered me a loaner car but its not like for like and frankly I don’t want to be responsible for someone else’s car for 6 weeks.
I’ll have to reinsure my old car again which will incur more costs. Can I ask them to reimburse me for the inconvenience or find me another like for like car?
Has anyone else been in the same situation? If so what have you done?

Can't they tax it on V62 for you? Dealer have offered me a loaner car but its not like for like and frankly I don’t want to be responsible for someone else’s car for 6 weeks.

And before anyone says it V5 doesn't show proof of ownership

Just fill in a V62?
Fill in the V62..

Tax the car and drive away...

No?

Likely caused by the previous owner retaining a private plate, and doing it by post instead of online.
I sent my V5c off because my name was spelt wrong (can't be done online). 7 weeks later and still waiting...... Checking online, one has now been 'issued' thankfully. And they were telling me only the day before that they didn't have it, it was lost and I'd have to pay £25 for another one. Really....

Just had a look at the v62 and it says “If you are not the registered keeper you may not be able to tax until you get a V5C in your name”.
The "may not" bit is important, let them try If the car is still taxed it has a keeper. If Mercedes know the previous owner (px, customer by back) they can request a duplicate V5 online for £25 that takes a few days to arrive.

The first thing to do is check if the car is taxed using the DVLA vehicle details page on the gov website. If it’s untaxed and the date is a random day of the month rather than the last the chances are it has been transferred to trade so you apply for tax and a V5 using the V62 at the Post Office. The car is immediately taxed and you will get a V5.

Car still has tax on it. They have asked for 7 days to get it sorted and knocked some money off the car. Fingers crossed they manage to get it sorted. If the car is still taxed it has a keeper. But he’s already said it isn’t ex anything spurious! Why bring it up? It’s a simple thread with a simple answer, I’ve answered it already and more than willing to help OP further if he/she needs it, why throw leg at me? FWIW I’ve done ths job for 20+ years so more than qualified
thanks for the advice though
