Can anyone explain the online v5 process?

I have just bought a used car and the dealer has sent me the V5 ref number and a PDF of the V5.

He said its done online and I can do it myself, and I have seen an online form filled in before when I sold a car - but I just had a look and I must be doing something wrong... I am using this link https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

When I say "not a dealer" and say "bought a vehicle" it tells me that the seller should send off the V5?

You can do. It online but you have to do it pretending you are the seller dealer so when you go through the site press the option for selling the car then put your own details in as new keeper.

It's pretty poor the dealer hasn't sorted all this out for you but it will work.

Ah right thats where I am going wrong. Ok thanks.

Yeah I was expecting them to do it tbh (big main dealer) but they said they did not do it till I was 100% happy with the car as its a distance sale (bought unseen) so they are happy to take the car back IYSWIM. But I am happy so will go on and register it.

The only odd thing is the dealer gave me the document number to use on the website. Its 1 digit longer than the document number on the actual V5.

Is that normal? Is it a trade thing?

The document number with the extra digit is the new keeper reference number which you will need to tax it correctly.

Doing it online avoids the Swansea people having to avoid it for a few weeks, so your taps and clicks feed straight too the fancy printer. It's a LOT quicker.

Definately faster online. I bought a car privately a couple of weeks ago. Transfered it online and got a new V5 within a week to my house.
