Sold a car today to WBAC. The guy asked me not to fill in the V5C trader section as that would " complicate things" when they sold it on at auction. He asked me to hand over the full V5C intact and that they would "sort all that out"
Is this normal practice? It goes against instructions from the DVLA and leaves me with possible liabilities if they screw up.
I wasn't happy with this but didn't want to spoil the (excellent) offer they'd made me so went along with this... except that I took photos of the V5 and all relative details whilst he was doing his inspection so I can do it online now that I'm home.

Any downsides to me :

A. Doing as he asked and leaving it to them ? or
B. Doing what I think is right and notifying the DVLA using the online service?

I sold mine to them Yesterday, and had an email from the DVLA today saying I had sold it to a motor trader.

I'd go on to the DVLA site, state you've sold it to a trader (ie, WBAC) and that'll be that. It keeps you right and there shouldn't be any reason for them to advise otherwise, it won't add another owner to the tally as it'll be "in trade" so regardless of you having a receipt etc, I'd declare it as no longer being your concern in the eyes of the DLVA... just in case..

I can’t remember the details, and I certainly wasn’t given the same line of reasoning, but the same thing happened to me. I was told WBAC would do it online next day.
I didn’t want the collection driver racking up a load of points/fines and as I understood it I was obliged to tell the DVLA so I did it online when I got home.
I had to use a WBAC address I got off their web page which I guess may or may not be the one they would use for themselves, but there we are, should have let me do it there and then if they wanted to be specific.

They said the same to me, and I wasnt keen on trusting them to do it as we all know its sellers responsibility to do it.

I thought I'd wait until later the next day and see if they'd done it before doing it myself.

They did it as they said they would. I got an email confirmation.

But as OP rightly worries, it'd be a nightmare to sort any post ownership fines if they forgot to do it.

DVLA make it very clear, it's the sellers responsibility to inform them of the sale.

Not sure why WBAC prefer sellers not to do it?

Anyone know why?

OR just declare the sale to the DSVA online, as the car departs

Yes, sold my mothers car to them yesterday, same story aka V5. No email from DVLA yet, though that would probably go to my mother, and I don’t know if they have an email address for her.

Delays in paperwork at the DVLA. They want to turn around cars ASAP, and led times from DVLA would kill them, or have to sell cars with incomplete V5C and need to forward to new owner.

I can only assume they also don't trust the seller to do the online form correctly. I don't blame them.

I did this and got a confirmation in the post dvla that I was no longer the registered keeper.
About 2 months after selling the car I got a number of speeding and parking penalties in the post. Wrote back to them all with a copy of the slip from dvla.
Was a bit of a pain as kept getting them for a few months. In the end found the car advertised onto the auto trader, so I then started responding back with details of the trader selling the car.
Interestingly the parking penalties were all from the road that his garage was located on.

Long story short, even though I had an acknowledgment that I was no longer the registered keeper I kept getting fines, mostly for parking.

Just be careful as they transfer the vehicle to them even if a day or two later they decide they cant buy it after further investigation. Happened with me owned car for less than 3 months. which they know about as on v5, then 2 days later told me and took another 2 days for paperwork to clear from their side, then expected me to sort things out with DVLA and pay for the months tax lost again.
Maybe I had a bad experience with them, on the other hand sold to Cazoo and had the perfect service.
