In that case I'd stick with Honda. A CR-Z would be a much more reliable alternative.

You can get a 2.0TSI GT for that budget, that’s a cracking engine and mine was more reliable than an equivalent era Civic. It was pretty economical too, usually averaging high 30s MPG over a tank. It’s probably worth paying for a mechanic inspection though. I’d agree a CR-Z would be worth seeking out too, they’re fun to drive and feel very well screwed together. Another option could be a Volvo C30 and you can get ‘FN2’ Civic Type Rs for that money, or Type S if you want cheap to run

If you go for a 2013 or later model, they changed from the EA111 to the EA211 1.4 TSI engine that uses a belt instead of a chain. The belt is good for 130,000 miles. You can get the belt and water pump replaced at an indy for under £400.

They are a little over your budget, but only by a few hundred. This one looks decent enough

I had a 2012 170 TDI Roc which was fantastic. Only thing I didn't like about it was it had not been specced with cruise control (I was second owner a year in) but apart from that I loved it.

That frustrated me at first but it could be retrofitted - I got it done by HazzyDayz who specialised in VW group

Yes I should have done that. I did fit the sat-nav unit myself and got rid of the factory setting that put the headlights on permanently.
