I have an itch for a sporty, good handling, nice to drive, good looking, somewhat special car. Special as in being a bit of an event or different to drive than just your normal car. Not special as in expensive, rare or a status badge.

The first thought was to get a weekend sports car. But my current reality is, I no longer have a daily commute to work.
I have been working from home and I don't see this changing soon. So I can barely justify a single car, let alone two.
But my current car doesn't scratch the above itch and yet I can't trade it for a 2 seats roadster. Because the few times I may need a car, I need rear seats and that it be somewhat practical.

I guess you can start seeing the dilemma.

I have tried thinking of something which would do both but failed to come up with anything.
Most coupes would either be 2 seats if they drive like sports cars or drive like a saloon, which is what I have now.

Then I thought about getting a MX5, as they are at least cheap enough and just keeping both cars.
But honestly, as is, I have to almost force myself to drive my current car at least once a week, for the sake of the car.
Because we have a second car, my wife's. So that is what is used to go to the shops etc, as it's more practical, cheaper to run, larger than my car.

So adding yet another car doesn't seem to be a sensible option.

I considered just selling the saloon and buying an outright sports car, since I basically need no car for commute
and the times I need a car for practical reasons are rare. Maybe once every two weeks or so.
But still, for the times that I do need a practical car, I would be at a loss with the 2 seats sports car.

Any ideas?

I would like something RWD, manual, petrol. This is the baseline as this what my saloon is.
Before going for FWD, AWD or an auto, I would just keep what I have.
Oh, it must be LHD. So TVRs are out.
Not looking to spend Aston money. Not looking for anything financially ruinous.
Would prefer a coupe.

I have considered something like a Mustang. But they are heavy cars which honestly don't drive that much better or are any more fun than a saloon in many ways. I guess you know what I mean. I also don't know how useful the rear seats are. I guess this will be true with basically any saloon-ish coupe with rear seats like Camaro, Monaro, 3 series, G37 and that type of thing.

There is of course the RX8. On paper perfect. A sports coupe with basically four doors and four seats which drives like a real sports car. But the consumption is ridiculous. Specially if my situation would change and I need a car everyday again.
Plus the unreliability, expense and trouble to keep on the road. And I'm not sure they like to sit. I just think they are not worth it here. This a car I have considered several times but never pulled the trigger.

A Cerbera would probably be an interesting option here. But I already looked and no chance of a LHD one. I won't ever drive a RHD in LHD traffic again. Just too inconvenient. Specially for something you are intending to drive quickly around b roads for fun.

I'm out of options or ideas. frown

What would you do?

It may be my default answer, but BMW 130i.

It’s lighter than the RX-8 - thanks to a magnesium-aluminium engine block - has the same 50:50 weight distribution, is more powerful at 265hp, has 50% more torque, a bigger boot and the option of five doors or three, in a more coupe-ish shape.

The 130i also has relatively short gears, so you can enjoy the engine without having to go way behind the speed limit and it’s both decently torquey at low engine speeds but revs nicely with max power at 6,600rpm.

It has the most powerful naturally aspirated non-M six-cylinder engine made, with hydraulic steering (in pre-facelift form) and no turbos. It should be far more economical and reliable than the RX-8, too. Yes, I’m very much a 130i fan, but it seems to cover many of the things you’re looking for.

Do you enjoy driving or is the reason you don’t drive your saloon much is because it’s boring? What would you need the rear seats for? Something like a Scirocco can be reasonably practical and fun to drive. How about a Toyota GT86? BMW 3 Series coupe or 4 Series if you have a healthier budget?

OP asks for a sports car. Clearly not interested even in sports coupes. You recommend a family hatchback? The 130i handles nothing like a RX8. Not even close. RX8 is a front mid engine car with double wishbones all around and a very low centre of gravity. A sports car basically. He also mentioned good looking and more special than a normal car, which is what the 130i is. Hard to get much more normal or common than that. 130i is basically a BMW Golf. Only RWD.

OP, you will struggle. I was going to recommend the RX8 before I finished reading your post Basically handles like a MX5, because it's a stretched MX5. But has space and practicality of a small saloon. Apart from that, maybe the MX5 for the weekend idea is the best one? Even with all that you explained, may be the easiest way out here.

Had a similar debate last year and went for a Mercedes C63S Coupe, just impractical enough to be special and has the right engine / noise to be a sports car. If you get the pano roof you are kind of open to the elements. You can also get a convertible if you want a drop top. The coupe has a lot of special engineering going on under the skin to make it special to drive but it is very sports saloon in its weight so might not be what you are looking for.

Lotus Evora is pretty light, is a sports car and has back seats but not a convertible.

911 convertible has back seats but they are tiny, is a sports car. Really like the Targa but they have no back seats and are getting heavy.

There are not many other options I can think of sorry.

I don't think they made any AMGs with a manual. Not since the 80's. C63 definitely is not. He specifically asked for a manual. And specifically said he's not interested in things like a Mustang, 3 series coupe etc, which the C63 is basically the same.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The reason I don't drive my current car often is because I don't need it. I have been doing home office and for the rest we have my wife's car. I actually enjoy driving it though. I mean, after all it's RWD and a manual, with enough poke. But I'm longing for a sports car for the weekend and find myself in the dilemma I describe above.

Yes, as said above I want a manual. Plus I don't feel cars like the C63 and these big saloon like coupes offer enough sports car to differentiate from what I already have.

Have you experienced some kind of trauma this afternoon or are you always this unpleasant?

The OP said: “Special as in being a bit of an event or different to drive than just your normal car. You appear to be the same Shifter1 who claims ‘RWD manual is a special car’. Yet now, a lightweight, front mid engine (research it if you don’t believe me), manual, RWD car with 50:50 weight distribution, BMW’s most powerful naturally aspirated non-M six-cylinder engine, less weight, more power and torque than the RX-8 is a ‘BMW Golf’. There are also only 7 130is for sale on AT and 25 RX-8s despite what you say about them being common. Go figure.

You may not like certain cars people suggest, but there’s no need to have a tantrum about it.

No tantrum. I should have filled the post with smileys. Maybe then it wouldn't hurt any feelings.

But I don't see anything in his post which makes it look like he would want something as ordinary as a family hatchback or another saloon. The 130i may be a bit more rare. But the point you are missing is that it looks the same as any other 1 series, including the diesels. That to me doesn't say special. He said he wouldn't want a Mustang, which is more special than a family hatchback. Why would a 1 series be special in this case? Not even mentioning that he wants something good looking too and a 1 series again is nothing special there.

And yes, absolutely. RWD manual is special nowadays. Just clearly not special enough here. RWD manual is the very starting point here. Read the OP again. So to me it seems a 1 series is not the type of special or type of car at all he seems to be asking. wink

If you had at least suggested a 1M coupe I would at least understand where you would be coming from.

But maybe the OP should comment himself. I could be totally wrong.

It’s not down to you to decide what the OP wants. What might be helpful is if you refrained from presenting your opinions on other people’s behalf and let them respond for themselves if they’d like to.

OP, if you have any questions about the 130i, let me know as I’m a serial owner. @stter1, I don’t need to justify my comments to you. You seem to have forgotten that this thread is not about you or what you like.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way you buy a great weekend car, for me that's a Corvette C6, you'll be finding excuses to drive one of these:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201181...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175145601824?hash=item2...

Depending on how much you want to spend the the Z06 is of course the pick:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108015...

Now when you need something practical you have one of these chilling in the back ground:

I'm sorry if I was not clear enough and I don't want to cause polemic.

I didn't reply because I thought the other poster already relayed the message somehow. But a 130i is not the right car. I don't really want a higher performance version of a conventional car. Otherwise it would be easy and I could just go with a M car for example, which I did consider.

I want something a bit more special than just a family car with a bigger engine and a suspension tune. Something designed to be special rather than being a tuned version of a normal car in order to be somewhat special. So this leaves out things like hot hatches, tuned saloons, souped up versions of normal 2 door cars and so on. Hence why I brought up that a G37, 3 series or Mustang would not do.

I hope this is more clear now. But thanks for your suggestion. I'm sure the 130i is a nice car. My mother in law actually runs one of the 1 series hatches. But it's one of the diesels. She loves it.

But it needs to be removed enough from my current everyday car. Any conventional car will not do that. Even if the engine is larger and it's tuned. I know if I go that path I will end up right back here again because I will crave something actually special and which drives more like a sports car. I know because this has already happened and here I am.

I have thought of this. The problem is, whatever sports car I end up buying would need to be something she would like to drive when we swap.

But this is a very valid path which I'm considering as well. Along with buying a MX5, keeping my current car and just making myself drive both at least once a week. MX5 wouldn't be my choice. But it's cheap and special enough considering. One of these 2 options seem like not only the easiest way but possibly the only way.
