Hello,
Probably been asked a million times but in a quandary.

Just put a deposit on a qashqai, really good spec and clean.

However it’s a 1.5 dci and just been told by a mechanic the dpf is prone to going.

It’s true it won’t be doing lots of miles, but if I give it a big run once a month will it be ok?

Or do I walk. I’ve just priced up petrols and are much more expensive.

How many miles and how often, exactly? Big means different things to different people...

It’s done 44k

Wife only totters around town. We said we’d use at weekends for family days.

She never would go on a motorway.

That would be me on the family days.

Can't speak for yours, however our cash cow has been brilliant...

1.5 diesel, no problems.

No harm in giving it a run but better to do it once a week or every 10 days. 20 - 30 miles, let it get nice and warm, constant speed, plus give it some through the gears, to allow it to passively regenerate.

Alternatively , not sure if it applies to Qashqai models but there's also active regeneration which still needs a run, but not as far and not for as long.

I’ve had a few of the 1.5d from new. Gutless with euro6 but otherwise good fuel economy. It is true that they can suffer from dpf failure, but this is mostly Londoners sat in traffic for hours at a time. Definitely give it a run once in a whilst but also change the oil every 10k miles. Nissan have a good goodwill policy with dpf so long as it has main dealer service history and ideally bought from a Nissan dealer. It’s normally the best part of 2k to replace but with good will around £400.

Don’t get the 1.2 petrol lots of oil consumption issues.
1.6 diesel is a bit more punchy but can still suffer dpf. My wife has a 1.6d Xtrail and so far 80k miles no probs. But I change the oil annually at 10k miles.

Is it worth chucking in that DPF cleaner once in a while?

Not ideal for your useage but a good run a few times a month would help.
You will read problems all over the internet, sadly our 2017 Xtrail 1.6 engine siezed at 42000 miles at a cost of £4000 to us so it's put me off that engine for life.
There are good and bad stories everywhere though.
We owned a 1.6 dig t 160 bhp petrol Qashqai before it and that was quite a decent engine with more than enough poke for it.

My sister and her family have had one since 2014 and they've had very little trouble with it. And I wouldn't think that their driving style really suits a diesel. There's is £0 road tax too.

A diesel isn't ideal for your usage but a good run every 2 weeks & you should be fine.
