I was wondering does the price of road tax put you off buying a model of car?
Went to have a look at a 4 x 4 Mazda, nice car but road tax £585! Maybe if I were going to be covering 10,000 miles a year in it I be OK with that but it is a local run around I am after and I own other cars so I expect to cover maybe 3 a year probably less. Garage also has a 2006 Hyundai Couple, really nice but also £585 road tax per year!!!

I feel that some cars are fast and/or interesting enough to be worth the higher rate, and I don't mind paying for that. However for a 'normal' car that's not especially quick, the high rate of tax would definitely put me off.
With newer cars it does feel worth buying one registered after 1 April 2017, which will either be £145 pa or will drop to that from 2023 onwards, regardless of thirst.

Until October, yes. Then I found a car in the spec I wanted, with loads of options and very well priced - several thousand pounds cheaper than anything equivalent. Paying an extra £260 per year (over Band K road tax, which is my normal limit) seemed like a small cost to pay. Went to have a look at a 4 x 4 Mazda, nice car but road tax £585! At least it’s a quick and nice-sounding 4.2 V8 all-wheel-drive estate, so more palatable than a 2.3-litre four-cylinder Mazda fake SUV. I couldn’t justify that cost for a CX-7, though I have toyed with one as a very cheap all-round car before…

Yes. I'd love an E86 BMW Z4 coupé but I'm not paying £340 a year in VED, especially when I rarely do more than 1,000 miles a year these days. They reckon it's linked to CO2 emissions, but how the hell am I emitting a lot of CO2 if I'm hardly using a car?ConwyC said:

Most 4x4's are around £280-340 a year so an extra £340-380 per year is a small amount vs maybe buying a diesel & having DPF issues which would cost more to sort the road tax.Went to have a look at a 4 x 4 Mazda, nice car but road tax £585! But if you want one enough you just have to bite the bullet. I bought a Z4M Coupe in 2019 and while my eyes water when I tax it every time I drive it I get over it!
Although having a 330i in Band K (£340 a year) as a daily may not be my most sensible choice.
Still man maths rules.

^^this^^The e92 m3 was a fantastic car, but being in a tax bracket that increased by £20 a year meant it didn't make sense in the long run.
If I still owned it and kept it another 5 years it'd be £700 in tax. Double the cost of insurance.
It's a shame because there are some great cars I eye up now and again from that taxation era but simply couldn't stomach paying so much for them to sit in the garage to be used a couple times a month.
I pay £600 a year tax on the 370Z Roadster and it does grate on me a fair bit, but I love the car, so it is a price that I'm willing to pay.
I'd much rather have a V8 engine over the V6 engine for £600 though!
I also get hammered for tax on the other 2 cars I've got, because they both get hit with the over £40k luxury tax. So I pay £490 a year for each of those as well.
