Swapping The Second Car

Hi guys,
I’m looking at swapping my BMW 118d E81 for something small, petrol and reliable as a cheap little commuter.
The missus drives the big family car most of the time so mine is only really used for work.
Getting a bit fed up of the little niggles the beemer keeps having so I’ve decided to swap it with something small and cheap while I save up for something more fun.
Since it’ll only really be used to and from work (40 mile round trip, b roads and a bit of motorway and 50mph dual) I’m looking at about £2.5k to spend.
Reliability and running costs are my main focus atm so I’m thinking things like Aygos and other small Jap petrol cars.
I took my bro’s MX-5 for a spin yesterday which was a good laugh, not sure what it would be like mpg’wise though.
Any suggestions welcome!
