5k car just for dog walking and quick trips

Looking at getting a 3rd car just for taking the dog out and quick trips to the shops as we both love our current cars but neither are suitable for a muddy dog or very quick 5 min journeys. The budget is around 5k, main criteria are that it needs to be reliable and cheap to fix/maintain if things do go wrong. Also needs a boot big enough for a large dog so probably large hatch back/suv, maybe even an estate if it has enough head room.

Any ideas would be appreciated

No need to spend that much. I bought an 07 Jazz for 1700 quid (70K miles) because it has the magic seats at the back which fold 'up' leaving a nice big space for the dogs to travel in. Bonus is they just walk in, no need to jump up or anything like that. The Civic of a similar year has the same if you're after a bit more poke. But the Jazz has been utterly reliable and does about 44MPG on local trips so cheap to run.

It looks like this, and no I don't clean it. Its role in life is to take dogs to and from their walk. One day I may take it to the local handwash and ask them to clean the inside and film their reaction

Save a load of money & buy a Fiat Multipla with their low boot entrances & masses of boot space especially with the seats down, they tick a lot of boxes:

I can certainly recommend a Logan, avoid the Qubo though, not as practical as you think and awful to drive

I'd buy a Nissan Cube just for the fun of it really, I think they are quirky and are actually 7 seaters and seem to have decent space with the back row folded, doubt you will see another on the road

I've had a few Ford focus for this kind of thing, always found them cheap and reliable, I've noticed a few of the dog walkers where I take our dog use the estate version. Honda accord estate may be another option - tend not to go wrong. I'd only go petrol on either of course.

Oh....and unlike some of the previous comments, I'm of a mind that it's entirely up to you what you spend and I'll certainly not advise you not to consider a car for short trips...FFS !

I bought this for the mutt.

5k and I love it. Dog loves it. Actually pretty good off road.
Loads of space for all the other jobs in life that are needed too.

Mpg isn’t great but only use it locally.

Thanks for the suggestions. Got a few things to look at out of this. Also for those saying to just walk and not drive for 5 min journeys. Where I live there are no pavements or footpaths to any of the nearby shops etc so you have to walk miles on a massive detour for up to 45 minutes or just drive for 2 minutes
