Currently in the market for either a Guila Veloce or a Kia Stinger.

Dealers are driving me insane - I'm getting the car values checked via the Parkers car valuation tool (paid one) and the values are coming in at anywhere 2-4k less than what the dealers have these vehicles up for. I refuse to pay 28 grand for a car they've part ex'd for 23 and which my bloody insurance company is valuing at 21K. It's the equivalent of buying a house then insuring it for 75% of what you paid for it.

They absolutely refuse to budge on prices too, they're becoming beyond annoying and irritating now. It's plain greed.

Are the Parkers valuations just dog sh*t?

What's going on here? I'm aware used car prices are up right now but when I'm seeing up to 6k in descrepancy in terms of prices it's pretty sh*t as a buyer.

Just the way it is currently.

Alternatively buy privately. I don't see any reason for buying from dealer (especially if you know about cars). You're just paying a few K extra for the convenience of potentially being offered a coffee as you get your pants pulled down.

Kia will have 7 years warranty which I have heard to be very good. Whatever 'warranty' the dealer will offer you will be a scam anyway.

Parker's have never been that highly regarded for valuations.

Ultimately if you see a car, be it a Stinger or whatever else and everyone you look at is in the same price range then that's the market price, you can choose to buy it or not but quoting Parker's guides at a dealer won't make any difference to them.

As someone else said maybe consider buying privately instead to get closer to the Parkers prices.

It's simply a function of supply & demand in the current market, caused by exceptional global circumstances.

Your accusation of plain greed by the dealers is purely hyperbolic, unless you are also willing to admit to your own greed in demanding that somebody sells you a car you want for below market price.

Finally, Parker's valuations have always been st, for however long Parkers have been around for.

If lots of dealers have a car of a certain type and age at £28k, and one car valuation site says all of these cars should be sold at £21k, guess which one is wrong.

Used prices for most cars are through the roof at the moment for various reasons.

Surprised Parkers is still going, tbh.

Hence me buying new as the used 12-24 month old car is close to new list with discount.

Parkers valuations were considered irrelevant 20+ years ago.

When did people start being so concerned about a cars value?

Surely if you’re buying you need to be satisfied with the price and satisfied that you can afford said price. The market is in a different place to where it was a couple of years ago, which means a 4 year old car now is worth more than its 4 year old equivalent would have been in March 2020.

But if you’re looking for a £28k car and can afford it the fact you or some online tool says the car is worth less is irrelevant. Unless there’s an anomalous dealer asking £30k when everyone else is asking £23k then they’re all asking roughly the market price. So if you’re upset by the asking price you maybe need to start looking at cheaper cars.

Buy one off Parkers, they sound like top value.

Thanks for a concise demonstration of the ad hominem logical fallacy there.

Just looking on Autotrader there is just one Stinger and one Giulia currently for sale privately in the price range given, it's not as easy as you suggest. You won't need to buy a warranty from a dealer if it's got the Kia seven year one.

Anyway Parkers is a joke, Glass's and CAP are mostly irrelevant in the trade these days as they use Autotrader to price to the market by using the values on the Dealer Portal which is where the Low, Good, Great Price comes from.

That's pretty much the point, the valuations are all wildly different depending on where you're looking so as a buyer, it's difficult to know what the actual true market value is (taking the usual dealer markup into account).

Ultimately, if I call my insurance company and they're saying they'll insure the car for 23k but the dealer is asking for say 27k it hardly inspires you to go and buy.

Surely it's up to the insurer to put you back in the position that you were in in the event of a claim, if the car gets written off/stolen after a week they'll have to pay out on the market value won't they?

The true market value is what someone is willing to pay for it.

With regards to insurance, unless it's an agreed value policy, the insurance company will just pay out market value, irrespective on what figure you give them.

Dress it up however you like. The consensus view is that in the current market, the prices you are seeing are the actual market prices, rather than "plain greed", and that Parkers valuations have never been gospel.

Demonstrate your car buying prowess by taking in your Parkers guide and expose their rouse.

Demand to speak to the manager if the salesman wont immediately give you the £6K off.

If that fails, write a firmly worded letter to the Dealer Principal.
