Sporty estate £25k

Looking for a new to me estate with a budget of £25k.
So far all I can see is a Golf R estate or leon cupra. What got me looking at golfs were 300hp, 4wd and estate without massive running costs associated with AMG or RS products.
This is foremost a family car to be used to ferry my newborn and partner around.

This is the list of what I want in a car.
Estate for practicality. My 330e saloon boot isn’t big enough.
4wd. I love the sure footedness my legacy spec b has in bad conditions.
300hp seems to be the magic number for me as a usable amount of power.
Less than 5 years old. I plan to keep this for a long time.
Petrol. Diesel doesn’t fit in with my usage profile. Inner city 70% motorway 30%. Plus the potential issues with a dpf and injectors.
Hopefully the PH massive can come up with some cars I haven’t thought of.

BMW 335d xdrive touring?

I had almost the same brief and budget. Took delivery of 69 plate Golf R estate from Cinch about a month ago. So far, made up with it.

Got 36mpg on a good run yesterday. Coming from an A6 Avant so the golf boot is certainly smaller but plenty big enough for the vast majority of the time. Mine has roof bars so I will put a Thule box up there as and when required.

It's absolutely rapid as you would expect. I've found the nav to be poor but I just use Google maps through the android auto.

are you happy with your current 3 series?

2 options for you

330/335D 3 series touring, or spend a bit more money (given the current market probably 30k-32k) and get a 530d/540i touring. 540i .

The 540is seem very mileage sensitive so if you dont mind something in the 70k miles range on a 2018 plate you could get one in budget just about.

G31 will swallow everything you can throw at it although you may find the G21 perfectly suitable given your 330 will no doubt lose a fair bit of space due to the batteries (the G21 - 3 series touring boot space is 50% bigger than what you have atm)

I was in a similar situation when my Cupra St went back. Needed something with a big boot but also had a bit of poke.

Bought a 3 series GT and the boot and room in the back has been absolutely plenty for us. I've got a one year old and a four year old.

A 2017 S4 Avant may be just about be within budget. Probably higher mileage than you’d like though.

340i tourings are do-able for your budget, albeit outside of your age requirement starting 2016.

Edit - Just realised you want 4wd too but maybe worth a look.

Insignia VXR very sensible running costs (apart from the high tax) you can these up to a 2018 so maybe worth keeping an eye out for:

I'm in the same situation and to me it comes down to the Golf R or the V60. The Volvos are far less prevalent so seems that may just have to take whatever is available and can't be too picky on spec, but with the VW, there are more available so can be a little more choosy.

Of course a lot of the Golfs are ex-lease so lots are pretty basic spec, no Prets, pan roof, DCC etc. but there are a wider spectrum of specs for the Golf

You might get lucky and find a Merc C300 in your price range. Or an XF 300.

Not Golf R pace but completely useable performance for a daily drive.

Do you need the wide opening of the estate body?

I thought I did and I got an Arteon. Same reason as you - a newborn, well he's 6 months now.

Massive boot. Swallows the pram and all his stuff. Same with the Superb. Both come with the 2.0 TSI 280 petrols and 4wd. My own is a 240bhp BiTDi

S4 B8.5 Avant ticks all but the age box. It will be 6-7 years old rather than 5, but if you get a low mileage one then sorted. Surprisingly reliable, especially the engine. Routine maintenance very straightforward. It's supercharged for extra giggles.
