Have I bought a dodgy car from trader?

Hi.

I'm very worried. I bought a car from a trader with a proper premesis in Lincolnshire on Saturday. After paying the money, he then decided to tell me that he had no V5 for the car as the last owner had not dropped it off. He said I could tax it by going to the post office with a V form to request a new V5. Today I went post office and it was rejected by the computer so they told me to contact DVLA. They told me that he should have given me V5 and that I would have to apply by post to have the car SORN and then request a new V5 at a cost of £25. They also said I cannot drive the car and it must be SORN until I receive new paperwork which could take 6 weeks!!!!! I contacted the trader who apologised and said that he had received his new SORN form today even though he sold it to me on Saturday, he said he would contact the last owner today but I've heard nothing back, now he is ignoring me. What is he hiding?

Tell the trader you need it sorted tomorrow or you'll be wanting your money back.

I have to ask why you bought a car without a V5? When he told you he didn't have one you should've demanded your money back there & then. As he would've pulled out all the stops to get the V5 issue sorted.

My Maserati arrived with no V5. The car was as you expect.

You can tax it without a v5, by filling in an application for a new one.

That said, if you're not of the mindset that I am, it is an issue and is a dealer problem.

Same as above, my car had no V5 either because the dealer was too much of a lazy arse to sort it. Nothing dodgy.

Just fill in a V62 at the post office, you'll probably have to pay £25, then pay the tax due at the post office. Hey presto the car is now taxed in your name and you can drive around in it all you want.

I think all the dealer is trying to hide is that he is a lazy incompetent fk wit

It would depend on if there is still a registered keeper against it, if thats the case they write to the previous owner first. The easiest way is for the dealer to contact the previous owner and get them to request a replacement V5 then forward this to you.

Out of interest does the dealer specialise in BMW, Merc etc with large wheels and stick on bits ?

Same here. Was dreading trying to explain what I wanted at the local Post Office but they were excellent. 5 minutes later I was walking out able to drive my new purchase and about a week later my new V5 arrived from the DVLA.

As I said, the post office refused as the computer had a block on the car so they told me to call DVLA and they told me I have to SORN the vehicle and until that's done, I can't request a new V5 with the V62!!!!

The post office is correct if the vehicle has not been passed to trade,you can not tax it on a V62,you will have to apply for a new V5 (£25) and wait until the new one arrives which can take around six weeks as DVLA write to the registered keeper to inform them someone is applying for the V5 as long as there's no objection a new V5 is then generated in your name.

Not gonna give too much away unless it definitely goes t*ts up but he is in Spalding. I'm giving him 7 days to come up with the original V5.

Ah, I didn't know if it was another dealer that i used to work for. But it wasn't spalding way.

I suppose technically it could have outstanding finance on it as lease companies retain the logbook although I’d have thought a trader would understand that.
