BMW 116i or Astra 1.0
Discussion
Hi all,
Looking to buy a new car for the wife (who does a 16 mile round trip to work, into the city).
Currently seeing a 17 plate Astra 1.0 with the updated interior and 30k on the clock that fits the bill perfectly. Giving her all the interior gadgets that she needs.
However, she has seen a 116i 14 plate with 95k on the clock that seems to check out. Full service history / clean MOTs etc.
My question is, are there any known issues on the 116i’s that I should be aware of?

- also looking at the sub £10k bracket.
My wife has a 2016 Astra Elite Nav albeit a diesel one. I recently had a 2016 BMW 330D which I have now sold and use her car when I need one.
If you can get past the badge, the Astra is actually a really decent car in my opinion. Handles better than you would expect when pressing on, rides well and as hers is an Elite Nav it has equipment levels that puts much more expensive cars to shame really. Heated seats in the back and heated steering wheel as an example. Also has Android Auto/Apple Carplay on a good size screen which the BMW won't have.
My point is that it's an obvious step down from my car but not enough that it bothers me to be honest, in fact it's a step up in some places like infotainment and extra tech like the heated steering wheel.
In your situation I'd much prefer the lower mileage Astra over a leggy one series. In fact if we are talking about non-performance models I'd still prefer an Astra over a 1 series regardless of mileage. Maybe stretch your budget a bit and get an Elite Nav if you can.
ETA - Not even that much budget stretch required at all! The first link is a 1.4T, not sure if the 1.0 you mentioned is due to insurance. Second link is a 1.0 if that's the case.

The Astra is the one to go for, unless you want the badge the Vauxhall is the pick, especially if it's an Elite spec model:Looking to buy a new car for the wife (who does a 16 mile round trip to work, into the city).
