Should I move on from my 987S?
Discussion
I purchased an '06 987S last year as a reward for a few years hard work. Really enjoyed the car until some recent hick ups.
In the last few months I've done a full suspension & springs change as the old ones were getting to the end of their life (failed MOT). New tyres (Michelin PS4), New lower control arms. Plus a major service with new spark plugs, oil etc. (£5.6k)
Yesterday the Alternator failed on the drive home. So had to be towed to my local garage.
In total including the car, the cost is now running close to £20k. Resale value will be £8-10k.
I'm now contemplating selling it in a few months time. Then next year buying something newer/more reliable in the £35k range (981, F-type or something similar) as I do enjoy having a convertible.
Or should I stick with it as it's had a full refresh on major parts? So hopefully no further failures in the near future. Plus it's a weekend/ Road Trip car. so isn't used on a daily basis.
Thanks in advance.

Over the years I have had to plough SO much money into my Evo 6 Extreme, that selling it would never cross my mind as I'm way too far in, in terms of money spent vs what I'd get back.
And having spent all the money it's basically working perfectly now, so I'd hate to get rid of it for someone else to enjoy it problem free.

Those aren't hiccups. Suspension wears. It's a performance car and the condition of the roads aren't great. Any car will need servicing. Do you want a well driving, handling and riding Porsche or do you want a basket case?
Regarding change for change's sake. I am a bit like that with motorcycles. The one I use is suitable for most of my needs, but I am still window shopping getting distracted by the next new toy. Do you want a new toy enough to make to take the hit on the money you've spent on the Porsche, much of which seems like routine maintenance to keep it functioning correctly?
My experience as a 987 owner is that it's quite often one step forward, two steps back. Thankfully under my ownership my car hasn't needed any significant mechanical work, but the list of things that either need doing, or I want to do, continually grows. For instance yesterday I spent some time cleaning the drains, and fixing the rattly wind deflector. Both successful, but while doing these small jobs I discovered that the ball joint for the hood push rod needs replacing on one side, and the tension cord that run across the top of the roof has completely gone. Neither are big jobs, but they get added to an already long list that includes lots of cosmetic things that I'd like to do. That being said, the car owes me nothing and I love driving it. Sometimes you have to actively do something to rediscover that love for a car (a road trip or a long Sunday drive), and in doing so you'll find your answer.
If I was in your position I'd keep hold of it a bit longer, particularly with good weather round the corner.

This dilemma of keep spending money on a car happens to all of us who care about our cars whether its a Porsche like the OPs or a mundane hatchback like my Octavia
Took it in for its MOT and cambelt/waterpump change last September to be told the rear discs/pads were knackered and one of the tyres had a bulge from potholes. And the front discs and pads were nearly up for replacement too.
So now I have all new discs, pads and cambelt done and i know its good for another 50+K. I have no intention of getting rid of the car and because i know it and trust it. And the money I spent is only a few months repayments on a new car.
OP has spent far more than I have but like me, use your 987 and enjoy the car/money you`ve spent on it, which seems to be the general consensus in this thread!

Trust is probably the wrong word when talking about a 15-year-old Porsche Took it in for its MOT and cambelt/waterpump change last September to be told the rear discs/pads were knackered and one of the tyres had a bulge from potholes. And the front discs and pads were nearly up for replacement too.

I tend to buy cars that are 15-20 years old and it's normal for me to spend several K in the first couple of years getting it up to scratch.
Then there'll be a couple of fairly cheap years before a big bill every three years or so.
The big bills are certainly bigger with prestige German brands, though (and Italian as well, I'd imagine). Which is one reason why I've never pulled the trigger on a Boxster despite them offering good value if you look at purchase price alone.

I have a 987.1 S 3.2
Huge specification and in fantastic condition.
In the last 9 months I’ve:
Replaced all the brakes, discs, pads sensors etc.
Replaced clutch and flywheel along with both seals
Starter motor
Alternator
LED interior update
Plus a load of smaller odds and sods
New battery
New front tyres
4 wheel alignment
Wheel refurb (garage messed up with alignment tools…was FOC)
Full detail and ceramic
Love the car.
These aren’t dropping in value and good ones are increasingly hard to find. Mines on about 58k.
Stick in there!

I'm in the keep it branch too. I've had my 56 plate 987 S for around 6 years now, and it's done about 57k. New clutch a couple of years ago which was pricey and it is started to feel a it's age, but as others have said I think it is difficult to know what to replace it with at a similar price point. Went out for a three hour drive in mine yesterday and really enjoyed it - longest trip for some months.
Hope you have a good time with it this weekend. I don't think I will sell mine anytime soon, values seems pretty rock solid.
