Quite like the look of a 182 or possibly a 197. Theres a few for sale locally with belts etc done. Only thing that puts me off thenm is what I've heard about the gearboxes on them.

I think you'll find the 182 better than a 197.. I've not checked Clio 172/182 prices for a while, but if you can take time to find the right one, it will reward you. I had no g'box issues with mine - but it was a low mileage example...

May be able to sneak a MK5 edition 30 or a very nice standard GTi.

Depends what you want - Clio would be a better track / out and out fun car. GTi would make a better/more practical hot hatch for day to day use. You also have the meganes, civic type R, focus ST. Take your pick, they are all good and have their own unique characteristics

I have an Ed30 - very tuneable if that’s your thing and seems to be holding money well

Yeah been told to get a 182 by my girlfriends uncle as he says they're fun to drive. Spotted one for sale in my town for £3.9k with belts done so may consider looking at it.

Harry Catchpole has a dirty bashed up Clio 182. It’s got huge miles but highly maintained and Michelin tyres.

Given he drives so much exotic stuff and no doubt has some far “better” cars he ownes it does say a lot about it.

Triple BMW 130i owner here - so I’m biased - but that’s what I’ve bought several times as a sub-£6k hot hatch: 265hp at 6,600rpm, 315Nm at 2,750rpm, so it has torque and revs very well, plus rear-wheel-drive traction, it’s very lightweight compared with other six-cylinder hatchbacks at 1,375kg and sounds glorious. If you want something exciting but grown up, that’s where my money would - and did - go.

+1 to the 130i. I owned an LE for 7 years and it was brilliant!

Had a great condition one for five months and decided it was too good for me and sold, as I had work cars every day and could see it depreciating. Then bought number two - a much cheaper one and had that for five years. Then sold it to get an estate car when we moved house and bought number three shortly after the tip trips and furniture moving was over.

I'd suggest looking for the best ST-3 Focus you can find:

Or you'll get a very nice 208 GTI:

It depends what you like to be fair.

I'm a big fan of RWD and loved my 325ti Compact so a 130i would be my choice, but that doesn't suit everyone.

Ex-owner of a 325ti and current 130i owner here; the 325ti sounds amazing, has a better quality cabin and I personally love the stubby looks. The 130i is better in every other way.
