Whats the prediction on car prices over the next few months, anyone think they will collapse with the world economy seeming to go that way?

I don't know if they will collapse because I think the limited supply will cushion their fall. But I think the economy is weakening and the cost of living crisis is probably stopping would be buyers. I think they'll fall a bit but not back to pre covid levels

My view is they’ll stay pretty much as-is, there has been massive disruption to the supply of key materials for new cars first from COVID and now with the Russian feckery in Ukraine.

Manufacturers are simplifying and reducing their ranges to cope and yet many cars still with 12+ month lead times. It’ll be 9+ months before all that normalises, then extra time for pent-up demand to be satisfied.

Only after that you may see used car prices sliding again. Only caveat is seasonal fluctuation on niche cars.

All IMHO and having read some market updates around electronics supply.

Being discussed in depth on other threads.

Gas guzzlers are understandably down.

But many used car sectors are continuing to rise including high end, med end, niche, focused sports especially limited run models, estates, hot hatch, economical and cheapo end.

This scenario will continue until late 2023.

Probably.

Possible car price collapse already being discussed here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

What's tricky for potential buyers is that I don't see a sudden collapse, due to short stock as noted, so no 'black Monday' type event you could wait for to buy after. Yet at the same time, I do expect prices to gradually return towards normal (ie lower) over the next 3 years or so (because the causes are temporary), so if you do buy now, for most cars I'd anticipate higher than normal depreciation over a typical length car ownership.

So I think either buy something properly special that's likely to remain in demand, or if you're buying a normal type car, maybe go for PCP so you at least put a floor on your losses.
