I've been recently looking to buy a car and want some advice for the cheapest insurance quote. I found that putting my parent as policyholder (eg, my dad owning the car) and me as main driver gives the cheapest quote.

I'm wandering if this is legal/not insurance fraud as I'm being honest about being the main driver and my dad will infact own the car if this proves to be viable, which I believe doesn't make it fronting

Policyholder = main driver normally?

I was kicked off a policy for doing exactly that, that was back in 2007. Insurance companies aren’t stupid.

If the OP is the main driver it's not an issue, were you the main driver but you were under your dads name as the second driver?

It's fronting.

Insurance for young drivers isn't cheap so look at something with telematics.

Put the quote in your name with your old man as the named driver.

You'll also begin to earn your own NCD.

I passed my test in 2017 and spent close to £4k insuring my Focus ST170, not something I'd do again but wanted something faster than a Polo. My advice would be to just bite the bullet and pay the brutally high first year costs legitimately, don't look for loopholes and grey areas to try and save a bit of money. Once you have your 1st year NCB then it starts to become more reasonable, by the 3rd year it's very much acceptable. I'd go for something from the 80's if I could buy my first car again, nothing else comes close to their insurance prices and they're so much more enjoyable to own than an Ibiza/Polo/Fiesta. Black boxes suck, the cost sucks, 1st year insurance sucks as a whole but the sooner you suck it up the quicker it becomes cheaper and easier. By the time you're 20 you'll be able to get insured on anything you want for sensible enough money.

My advice OP is to get quotes on a wide range of cars, and not necessarily focus on the obvious candidates.

Running quotes for the minute for my 18 year l son. Sensible stuff like small engined Fiestas/Corsa's coming back at £2k, a slightly more snorty Alfa Mito £2.5k yet for a laugh I ran a quote earlier on for an Audi TT 3.2 V6 Roadster we'd seen for sale locally and it came back for £1600 with Hastings Direct..

Being the policyholder automatically makes you the main driver surely? I've seen no option to alter that in quotes I've been doing, if you not the PH then you're a named driver on the policy.

I've also never seen the option to be the policyholder but not the main driver. The systems I've seen assume the policyholder is the main driver and anyone else will become additionals. If you have found somewhere that does that though then I assume it'd be fine. Main driver has to be the person who uses the car the most, regardless of ownership - so that is what you need to ensure you're being classed as on the policy documents.

Over the past few years when doing comparison quotes, it always asks who is going to be tge main driver. Particularly on multi car quotes where there is one policy holder and multiple cars and drivers.

OP. Get the insurance in your name as policy holder, with parent(s) as named drivers, and get some NCD in your own name - it will benefit you in the long run.

NCD is fhe key here, you won't be earning any so it will bite you further down the line.

I took it that the OP was getting confused between his dad paying for the policy therefore being the policy holder & as he stated him being the named driver & his dad being the secondary.

Top tip, don’t use your real details when tinkering around with comparison websites or they’ll bombard you forever with spam. Fernando Alonso, same age, similar postcode, awol@leavemealone.com gets all the spam. You’ll still get all the quotes on the screen, if you like one do it again with the correct info and carry on.
I’d avoid blackbox quotes, there are plenty reasonable ones without.

Having spent a lot of time recently running quotes I thought I'd test this theory. From what I've seen age and driving experience (without any claims) has a far bigger affect on dropping insurance quotes for young drivers. NCB appears to not add all that much.

Of course it's better to have it than not, and insuring in your own name if you're the main driver is the correct approach but the issue is that to get a decent quote telematics becomes essential, and that appears to be an absolute minefield based on reviews I've read with certain companies really taking the piss on additional charges.

Be careful simply inputting details into comparison sites using your Dad as policyholder and you as named main driver - it’s then what’s on the policy docs that count.
Your dad can pay ( if that’s the case ) but insure the car in your name as policyholder and main driver with him as named additional driver.
This avoids fronting ( illegal ) and starts you on the trail of getting ncb.
Admiral would be a good start to look at especially if you don’t want black box.
Good luck.

Like previous posts have said, suck up the cost for the 1st year and get that NCB and don’t do anything dodgy. You will pay more if you get caught out, not counting the constant stress you will have when driving worrying about what can happen if you get in a prang.

I did my sisters insurance for the first year, paid 2k with direct line for the first year.
2nd year with the 1 year NCB, came down to 1250.
