13k choice UK STI WRX or S1?

The two cars I am contemplating, I do about 5k p.a mix of rural backroads and virtually no motorway trips.
S1 probably most financially sensible but the WRX is end of era stuff and probably more charismatic sound track?

As someone who has owned multiple Impreza's I would probably not own the car with the 2.5lt engine. It's had so many failures over such a lengthy period of time that it's a lottery owning one. I understand the later cars are better but some have still failed.
Also, the engine was considered in the danger zone over 60k miles, unless rebuilt with uprated/forged parts and even then some have failed.
Love Subaru and Impreza's but it's hard to get away from the 2.5 being an extremely unreliable engine.

As a previous S1 owner, it’s a rapid little car but beware that some are quite stingy with options and the clutch is like chocolate. Otherwise great fun on a backroad. I got bored of mine but couldn’t put my finger on why as i’d probably have another. Not sure they’re worth what they cost though.
Once you’ve found one with a decent spec (flat bottom steering wheel, gear knob upgrade, decent service record etc.) you’re probably better off paying for the S3 instead. More practical and same recipe.
The one you’ve linked has things listed as options that aren’t such as ‘quad exhausts’ and a steering wheel with buttons... but it does have the gear knob I mentioned- though it only costs about £80 so nothing you couldn’t retrofit to a flat bottom steering wheeled one.

I suspect if you sacrifice the 4wd then there are definitely better (S1) or more reliable (Subaru) available for less -e.g a Fiesta ST or a Megane renaultsport. Maybe even a Mini Cooper S if you still want some character.
I think a TTS could offer a bit more enjoyment than the S1 for a lot less money.

Had a TTS stage 2, I would vouch for the enjoyment factor. I think a TTS could offer a bit more enjoyment than the S1 for a lot less money.

I don't mind a double clutch gearbox, in fact a £8k Clio 1.6t looks tempting and saves a few quid. I bought a Fiesta ST new and didn't really like the ride quality and seats gave me back ache.
The EVO looks quite cool, I am not sure how I will feel paying over £600 road tax each year when the novelty has worn off and it becomes 'just a car'
A left field choice would be to spend money on making the 911 more useable and drive that far more regularly that apart from winter. I have just rebuilt the motor and fitted EFI and trigger wheel fired ignition so mechanically it should be sound, just needs to be made showerproof!
I don't mind a double clutch gearbox, in fact a £8k Clio 1.6t looks tempting and saves a few quid. I bought a Fiesta ST new and didn't really like the ride quality and seats gave me back ache.
