Autotrader has the most for sale and where average joe will sell their car. I doubt any traders are not advertising there accept driveway ones maybe.
Facebook and gumtree have some bargains but my experience of selling on there is 100 “is it still available” and other crap. Good for sheds.
EBay search is chaotic and hard to scroll without clicking into an advert in my opinion.
Pistonheads for special stuff - most people have never heard of PH sadly

Autotrader is generally a much safer bet than gumtree, facebook or ebay. While not foolproof, they do have a few basic checks and usually flag cars that have been damaged. The website and search features are also very well designed, unlike Pistonheads. This is why I prefer autotrader.
For nearly all cars there are more examples on sale on AT than anywhere else. Therefore, if having a discussion about what you could buy for X budget, you'll get a more accurate idea of where the market is for that model from AT than anywhere else. Select model, sort price high to low, go to the middle page, that's the price.
When it comes to actually selling my own car I listed it here on PH, for exactly the reason you mention. And sold it within a couple of weeks to a very friendly and straightforward fellow enthusiast.
If I'm buying I'll look everywhere (within reason) to maximise my possibilities.
