Temp car - £3000

Good afternoon,

My sister and her family are visiting the UK for 2 months over the summer (British expats in Abu Dhabi).

Car rental is about £3000 for the period (apparently) so they are thinking of buying something and then selling. Worse case they throw it in a skip at the end and no worse off than renting; more likely they recoup some / all of their initial outlay.

My thoughts are something that does not need anything doing and reliable. Some thoughts:

- Honda Accord estate
- Toyota Avensis / Corolla
- Honda Legend
- Subaru Outback
- Lexus IS250 / GS300 / LS430 on LPG
- Ford Mondeo 2.0 / 2.5t

Any other better ideas?

If going for a Toyota, avoid the 2.2 D4D and if you can, the 2.0 D4D too.

Might look a bit dull, but a Kia Ceed SW would serve well. Drove a petrol 08 plate to 100,000 and have put 54,000 on a diesel 59 plate to date. Good, well built cars.

I know the answer is always mx5 but I honestly think it is!

Failing that a mini convertible, hope the weather is holding up and should see almost no loss on sale

You sure that £3k is right? A quick browse on Nationwide Car Rentals suggests that a Mondeo can be had for £1,800 for a couple of months.

Anyway - I'd have a look and just buy something that takes my eye in decent condition for that price

Get something easy to move on so I'd say an Insignia or Mondeo.

There's a chap on another thread who runs a garage. He buys, services, and rents out cheap cars, and has a fleet of about 70-odd. I'd imagine he'd lend something out for 3 months for a tenth of your budget. No idea where in the UK he's based though!

He tends to favour Renaults and Volvos. I'll try and find a link to one of his posts, might be worth a look.

How about on.to?

They could rent an EV such as the Hyundai Ioniq or ID3 for 2 months at a cost of around £1000. Everything included (insurance, public charging etc.) and no deposit.

Let me know if interested as our referral code would save us both £50.

NP, we've used them for 3+ years now and has been a painless experience. Only thing to consider is they do charge a delivery/collection fee for the car and best to get something organised early if possible as they're very popular.

If you decide to buy a car, I'd pick one of these Germans with a long MOT that are popular and should be easy to punt on when you are done. Hopefully they'll survive a couple of months!
