I’d stay away from 6 pot petrol BMWs with that sort of annual mileage, fuel costs will be prohibitive

Mazda 6. We had one for 6yrs and it was utterly reliable, huge boot and v comfortable. Not an exciting machine but decent steering and a good gearchange. Perfect for your usage.

Estate is better looking than the saloon too.

I have a V50 that I've owned from new (2012), its now just passed 235K miles, its a diesel, but ignoring that as you are interested in petrol, virtually nothing has gone wrong!

A couple of suspension bushes, two rear shock absorbers, a battery and an indicator stalk (£45) - thats it - its still on original exhaust! Tryres regularly do 40K miles.

Its not got a huge amount of legroom in the rear (espcially if driver has seat fully back), but its a very reliable,dependable vehicle.

Given your budget though I would also consider V70s

The Mazda 6 was another option I was looking at actually as it does tick all the boxes. Just unsure whether the 2.0 or the 2.5 which would be best.

Ours was 2 litre. Performance was fine, not a rocket ship but OK for overtaking and a relaxed cruiser. 40mpg ish I think? 2.5 probably a bit faster, but more tax etc.

Try one, you might like it. The most zero-hassle car I have ever owned.

With that sort of mileage choose an auto may be slightly worse fuel wise but worth the benefit at the first traffic jam. Just have a gearbox service for piece of mind.

The 3 series with the 1.5 triple would be my choice.

I've just bought a low mileage facelift C180 BlueEfficiency Sport C Class estate for that budget. Looked at LOADS of things, estate and petrol (and auto) being some of our requirements and came to the conclusion the Merc was the best fit. Also has loads of toys, looks ok, goes ok and is incredibly well built.

That was also another contender that I had looked at as well. Just wasn't sure how the Merc engines fair up against the others

Honestly, I'd really consider a ULEZ compliant Euro6 diesel over a petrol at those kinds of annual mileages. Over the course of 3 years at 40,000 miles a year, even if diesel costs 40p more per litre than petrol, you'll still make a saving of £6000, given that diesels can easily achieve 50+ mpg and petrols usually struggle to beat 35 mpg in the real world.

Or, as a leftfield choice, what about an electric car? This nearly new MG 5 estate will save you £10,500 over 3 years on fuel, plus they are more reliable, will have 6 years remaining on the 7 year warranty, you are getting a newer car and they are nicer to drive than petrol or diesel equivalents due to no NVH from the engine.

Thank you buddy. The only thing that worries me with diesel is that I can see the prices going well above petrol and end up costing more to run a diesel as they eventually want to phase them out.

A4 oil consumption due to knackered rings on the 2.0Ts is indeed well known, and kicked in at about 50K miles on my car. Audi had a campaign to fix these FOC (new pistons and rings) so you may be lucky and find a car that's had it sorted.

I have a 2008 2.5 Hatch
Does about 35mpg mixed
Comfortable and smooth. Not quick but goes quite well.

Have a look underneath. Mine is a bit rusty.
Have had a few minor problems with it over 4/5 Years 40/50K but nothing serious.

2014 SEAT Leon 1.2 TSI estate with 55k miles?

Small engine but turbocharged so you'll still have a little more torque at lower revs which should help with maintaining speed on the motorways without killing economy.

£30 to tax and returns almost 60mpg on official stats.

Or a 2016 SKODA Fabia 1.2 TSI estate with 67k miles. Even cheaper to tax and even better economy. There's lower mileage ones out there but this one looks nicer.
