Fun second car, 4 seats, around 350pm with 4k deposit
Discussion
I'm in the market to replace my current temporary car (2008 CLK 320 CDI) for something more fun for the next year or so. I'm either looking at a PCP with 4k down and 350 per month ish.
I have a Vitara as the family car so the new one is just for me, although I'd like to take my wife and 4 year old out on occasion. I want something that is mainly fun over pure speed so im not that interested in power but it could do with being above 200hp. Must be petrol too as I don't really like diesels.
Most of my driving will be B roads or motorway. I work from home mostly so it'll be a fun car but will need to do long trips occasionally. Happy for a loud car just as long as it doesn't make my ears bleed.
Previous cars:
- CLK 320D mapped - Comfy but so boring, bought as a stop gap between cars
- Z4 Coupe 3.0l - Looks fantastic but 2 seats so was a bit of a compromise
- F56 Mini JCW Convertible - Not everyone's cup of tea but I loved it. Not really practical but I can live with it
- GT86 - Fun car but lacked torque and a bit too noisy (droney) on motorways.
- Golf R - Fast and practical but imo a bit boring
- Mini R56 Convertible - Fun but not reliable and a bit old feeling
- BMW M135i - Brilliant engine and fast but again not really fun as you were just going too fast to enjoy it
Now im open to any cars but I also want it to feel a bit special when I drive it as its not really a daily. Because of this I'd rather not have:
- Fiesta/Focus ST - Never really been a fast ford person
- Audi S3/TT - Similar to the golf R and although I like the TT for some reason I'd prefer something else
- Vauxhall/renault/peugeot - Appreciate the 308GTI, Megane RS and Astra VXRs are all good cars but I don't feel they're special enough
- BMW - Trying to like a 4 series or 2 series but I feel the m235/240i is similar to the m135i I've already had, and the 4 series is similar but heavier
I appreciate that leaves me with very little options! So I'm thinking either:
- Another F56 Mini JCW Convertible (pre 2018) - Inside looks nice, convertible for extra fun and maybe get the pro exhaust for some good sound
- F56 Mini JCW Clubman (pre 2018) - The practicality seems nice to use this instead of the Vitara on occasion but I feel this will be too dull.
- Alfa Giulia Veloce - This looks fantastic and I hear it drives well but not sure I'll get a great one for my budget. Also worries over reliability
- Thought about the Lexus RC series but they sound like they're not exactly a fun car

Since you said the Z4 wasn’t practical enough for you, the M135i was too fast and the 4 Series too heavy, why not go for a 130i? It shares the same engine as the Z4, with five seats but barely any more weight, it’s not as fast as the M135i but is more engaging and it’s much lighter than the 4 Series. Most of my driving will be B roads or motorway. I had a 130i alongside a work M140i and the 130i was by far the more satisfying car to drive. I currently have one as a weekend car and it works well on B roads and motorways and is more than exciting enough for me. Plus, your £4k deposit cash could be enough to buy one and then you’d have £0 per month to spend…
